Re: Cashed out my 401k and my wife and I have never been happier!!!
You mentioned paying off 'wife's medical bills' which indicates that she must have some ongoing medical problems that require healthcare insurance. The problem with working part-time or 1099 is that there is oftentimes no health care associated with the job. Unless you are close to 65 and can go on Medicare, one of you will have to continue work fulltime to get benefits and, unfortunately, employers are not covering additional family members under their programs anymore; they'll cover you, but you have to pay for anybody additional.

My BIL is 'retired' (family sold a business) but still pays close to $30,000 a year for medical insurance for himself, wife and 2 kids.

Good luck! The benefit of the 401K is that it does lower your taxable income, deferring it until you retire. I'm not a big supporter of it as it should never have been set up as a 'retirement' program and was initially set up for high income individuals so that they could move income into the future so they didn't have to pay taxes on it. With rising interest rates, people are going to have difficult time making the '8%' a year they need in the stonk market.

Hope for a SS check each month isn't a plan.. If I were you I'd sell some shit you don't need, put money back into a safe retirement plan and don't touch it. Good luck. I know times are hard right now.

I agree. OP doesn't realize most 401k plans allow you to borrow money against your 401k account. Best parts are:
- You are your own lender
- Payments including interest go directly back into your 401k.
- No IRS tax or early withdraw penalties, provided you fully payback you 401k loan.

I did this for down payment on a house, which enabled me to obtain a lower interest mortgage financing. Best investment I ever made, paid $315k for home in 2001 and sold it for $645k in 2005.

That enabled me to payoff my 401k loan, avoided IRS capital gains tax by reinvested it into my new house when relocating across the country for another job opportunity. In addition, I was able to rollover my 401k to my new employer's plan.

Those types of financial decisions are how I was able to retire 15 years earlier at age of 52 yo.

You might have missed the part where OP stated he lost his job so he cannot take out a 401k loan unless employed by same employer the 401k is drawn from - at that point its only rollover or a distribution

most people aren't going to live until retirement age. and with the value of the dollar, along with the instability in the markets and the economy, especially seeing that the govt can shut down more than half the country on a whim due to a cold and crash everything, why in the hell anyone would invest in a system that only makes the rich richer is beyond me.

i guess you're one of those that liked losing half their money in 2008, and now its finally just about gained it back and when you lose half again, you'll say "oh don't worry it'll make it back in 10 years"....

hope you time your retirement perfectly so that you don't have to cash out on a huge drop!

What's your thoughts on shifting some of my 401k into guarenteed lifetime income?

Many bad assumptions underlying your argument.

First and foremost that we’re all gonna die soon. Chill out.

You should have your age in fixed income, as a rule. So if you’re retiring at 65, you only have 35% in the stock market. Even a 50% loss there won’t affect you that much. Plus if you have two brain cells to rub together you can see market peaks and roll out when it goes down from an obvious top. I’ve done this twice and rolled back in near the bottom. Saw huge gains.

I’ve accumulated 2.4 million in my 401/IRAs, and I’m not yet 50. Granted I make a lot more than most but the principle is the same. Start saving young and don’t touch it.

lol- really, really not. You have no idea how much peace my wife and I have now. Would much rather be debt free and have ~500 left over each month than worry about every single dime because we didnt know if we could make ends meet each month. BTW every calcualtions we've looked at shows that by the time we retire based on the market we would only have about 150k anyway. That would avoid the penalty by still have to pay taxes. So, we could continue to freak out about money or at least live a bit and deal with a big IF about social security once we hit 68. If its gone- big deal well only need 1200 buck a month to live anyway
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6393019

and once again, you flex your financial stupidity

a 401K basically doubles every 6-7yrs on average, so if you never touched it, it would be worth several hundred thousand dollars or more when you're retirement age

you're also forgetting about inflation and medical insurance and a whole host of other expenses you will incur later in life

I completely understand worrying about money, but you should have figured out a way to pay down your debts over time, live within your means and continue to contribute to your retirement.

You have some relief right now, but the trade off is you've simply kicked the financial pain down the road.

I would tell you to get Dave Ramseys book, but it's too late, you already fucked yourself. Good luck, and I mean that.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79649054

This is the correct answer. Never touch your retirement.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83996639

In a functioning society based on law and order that is correct. Have you looked around lately?
How is your 401K going to do in high-hyper inflation?
You think it will keep pace? And if it does, do you think those in power, scrambling for ever more resources aren't going to tax it away from you? Sorry, we are coming to a time where you own what you can stand over with a rifle and wealth is measured in self-sufficiency and the clan you belong to. You can't buy those, by the way.

I'm pretty sure we looked into that when we cashed out and the time frame to pay it back or the amount or something was restrictive for us. I don't know about the OP, but if you are in a position where debt is eating you alive to the point you have to cash out, trading it for another payment instead of just being free and clear and starting over just isn't feasible.

Re: Cashed out my 401k and my wife and I have never been happier!!!
Greetings, GLP! Let me give you a little story because I think my situation is somewhat universal here on GLP and might be of use to some of you. My wife and I are lower/middle-class earners- she makes 16/hr as a CNA and I make 19/hr as a licensed level "D" wastewater treatment operator. Money has always been a struggle for us and we consistently have found ourselves in debt. Additionally, as of September 2022, I lost my job. I quickly found another for the same pay, but here is what I did. I cashed out my 401k (I had 63k after 11 years w/3% match=~42k after taxes and penalty)- set aside the money for taxes and here is how I spent it:

1.) Paid off our cars- 16k combined
2.) Paid off credit cards- 8k
3.) Paid off my wife's medical bills- 3.5k
4.) New furnace for our house- 5.5k
5.) Bought a few other needed things i.e. timing belt for car, new stove, new dryer etc...4.5k
6.) Put the rest in a wells fargo savings account-~4-5k

Never have we been more at peace. Prior to this we always struggled with money. We knew we needed some of these things but weren't sure as to how we could afford them. Plus the credit card bills were racking up. Now, some of you might wonder what we will do in retirement. Number one- we are hoping for SS, but even if it's not there, we only need ~1700 a month (combined) to live comfortably. We could essentially work part-time now and live just fine. Also by the time we retire 2047, our house will be paid off reducing our needed income to ~1200 a month- accounting for inflation as well!! So, long story short- some of you are in the same situation as us. I can tell you I dont care that many think we were stupid for doing this. That doesnt cause us to lose sleep- being in debt did, and now we have little to no financial worries. 100% worth it. And I could care less about the stupid stock market now. Something for you all to think about...

Awesome OP. No you weren't stupid. The market is a crock and at some point they will do a bail-in and your money would just be gone. ANd if they don't the investment can't keep up with inflation.

I cashed out everything in 2008 (before the crash) and never looked back. . But I have a bug out place 100% paid for, with solar, greenhouse and enough land for a few animals. I could live there for about about the same amount as you calculated.

I am still paying on the hobby farm, but I could sell the bugout and pay it off easy - even if RE prices crash by half. My retirement goal is 2040 ( I will be 60 ) - but 2045 or 2050 or never is fine too. I also have kids, and the way things are going they may be forced to return home - farm is set up to be dividable into a single bedroom efficiency, an two other 2 bedroom apartments. And of course there is room and hookups for an RV or camper or two - could even tie them into the real septic if I buried another tank.
The farm produces enough that we are somewhat insulated from the inflation prices. We can slaughter an animal for meat, get dairy from the cow, and the 1/3 acre garden produces a pretty ample supply of veggies and taters. If you aren't rural you should look into trading in the place you have and getting out - rates are higher now of course, but being more self-sufficient is the way to weather what is coming.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83996639

Love of money will not serve you. I am far happier than I ever was before. If you think the current system will keep going and going like the energizer bunny with all that is going on, then sure keep following rules made for better and more ordered times. I hope you are right and living a life of luxury jet setting around the world and I am stuck living in poverty with my friends and family around me , eating what I can scratch from the ground . You might note I am hardly destitute - the farm is worth a million in the current market , after the crash fully completes here - half that. (which is still more than I bought it for) and my remain mortgage is quite small. I have two kids in college right now.. once that is done it will be quickly reduced. The other place is worth 500K (agin probably half that after the crash and stillmore than I paid for it outright with 401K money.. right now that money is up 400% - did your stocks do that?) and produces rental income. You are pretty short sighted to think that only place to save money is in a bank or in a stock. This isn't counting the vehicles and other machines I use, or the fact my electricity cost is locked in for the next 20 years.

If you are going to suggest I made the wrong decision , then you need to address the elephant in the room - the current state of the world, and the likely places it will go from here.

I know of middle and upper middle class folks in the industry I'm in that are cashing in their 401K because they are going broke. Covid harmed the aerospace industry and related industry hard. of our age

He is a coming theme for the younger ones in their 40's.

We had to file for the big B.

A lot of folks from early 50' to mid 60's are having it bad and they are not reporting it.

My wife is good friends with an HR person of our age. She said that the early 2030's to 2040 time frame is going to be very rough for this group. She comes over when I BBQ and to play Scrabble. She is within our age group. She has basically quit talking about it because of the emotional hit. Plus all the firing/layoffs and rehires just to be removed from employment a couple months later.

She is the one that told us that the reports of our economy and financial news is bullshit.

Anyway, take from it what you will.

That's great!

I fucking hate debt, and it stresses me out having it hang over my head.

I'm retired with a paid off house, and living on savings.

I don't have Social Security because I didn't get enough quarters in.

It's actually better for me not to have SS, because probably all I would get is the minimum, with Medicare taken out, taking it down to about $600 a month, and only covering 80% of my medical bills, which are high!

Right now my medical bills are 100% paid for, because of no income, just 0.01% from the interest from my savings accounts and CDs, which is basically nothing.

My last surgery was around $40,000, which means I would have to have paid $8,000 out of my own pocket! Basic SS would only give me about $7,200 a year, so I'm $800 ahead by not having Social Security!

I know what the Medicare bills are like because of taking care of my mother. One night in the hospital cost her a small fortune because of what Medicare doesn't cover.

op is a complete financial dumbass and will forever regret that decision

good luck ever retiring, you'll be working till the day you die

lol- really, really not. If its gone- big deal well only need 1200 buck a month to live anyway

this is what the market schills don't understand.

most people don't make enough to invest enough in a 401k to every have REAL retirement money. thats why when the market is bad/loses, it hurst people like us more than anyone.

stock markets/401ks are not for everyone.

Many people I know never recovered from that. They were 64 in 2007 getting ready to retire and then couldnt. They couldnt live off SS so they had to keep working. 3 I know of passed away before the market recovered...

So you paid taxes and a 10% penalty to get out of debt that you should never have gotten into in the first place. Now you have no retirement savings and set the standard to never have it in the future.

Finally, you think you'll live on $1,200 a month 25 years from now. Assuming 5% annual inflation (currently running at least 8%) cost of living will be 3.4x current prices. You won't even be able to buy food for $1,200 a month.

You are a financial genius.

With that much money you could have simply filled for bankruptcy, in most states it only costs 1 grand.
Especially since you decided to kill of the credit cards.

The money you would have saved would have left you with a nice amount to live on.

i know some as well in that same situation. and it could happen again, i guess we are just supposed to "hope" it doesn't happen around when we retire? thats what the great "retirement plan" they sell the american people on?

not to mention it has happened more recently as well even with the "high" stock market. my coworkers mother was retiring and lost over $40,000 of her $200,000 or so retirement before she cashed out just last year.

that is a REAL, actual scenario many people are living through, and that is fucking sad to lose that kind of money when you worked your whole life saving it. that hurts them a lot more than someone who has money and millions invested, and those are the people that will tell you the market is a good thing.

and you are assuming guaranteed gains of a 401k that covers that inflation, his interest rates on his debt for the next 20 years that he would've never paid off, and that he was able to put enough money weekly in his 401k that he would be able to cover all that plus decades of retirement

different people, different scenarios. you gotta figure out whats best for you. one solution isn't the fix for every problem.

Get divorced, sell the house. Take cash advances on all the cards. Get citizenship in another country. Buy a house through a company.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84983852

How do you buy a house through a company?
 Quoting: RumoursOfDoom

As an expat, I can tell you that most people won't be able to afford to invest (buy) citizenship in another country. Plus you'd have to renounce your US citizenship which is also very expensive to do now. As long as you're a US citizens, the IRS will consider any foreign income you make the same as if you resided in the US. This is known as the "double penalty tax" where you pay taxes to the country you reside, plus the IRS (10% to the 'Big Guy').
You are born with the truth, then taught a lie.

you must've missed that part. of course, both of those aren't gonna keep up with inflation whatsoever, so enjoy losing money in the end, if you even live until retirement age with your anger issues you seem to have

I don't think your lower/,middle class.

My husband only makes $12 an hour and had been taking care of me for 6 years since I hurt my back.

I don't get any income from SS or the state.

My husband has a retirement policy but I've told him, no was should we touch that.

I'll probably die off early but his family live into their 90's and if he lives that long he's going to need his money.

Re: Cashed out my 401k and my wife and I have never been happier!!!
