1/05/2023 -- X1.2 class Solar Flare -- Earth facing Eastern Limb

A large X1.2 class solar flare has occurred on the Eastern limb of the Sun. (left side viewing from SDO)

As with past X class solar flares which are on a side facing Earth, we can see increases in charged particles as well as solar wind. The incoming charged particles (when excessive) can be seen on the SOHO satellite(s) C3 view [link to soho.nascom.nasa.gov (secure)]

When the charged particles arrive with the solar wind in the next 2-3 days from now (1/5/2023 8pm central) you can watch the compression of the magnetosphere around Earth here: [link to www.sws.bom.gov.au (secure)]

Once the compression of the magnetosphere occurs, and a buffeting of the magnetosphere happens with excess protons /cm3, and solar wind speed increases... I think of the incoming solar storm with strong solar wind like a wind storm.. and the charged particles like rain.... if you combine the two.. its like a hurricane... not just a wind storm!

Within 2-3 days of the arrival of the x-class flare, usually we see a noteworthy increase in deep earthquakes, and shallower larger earthquakes. Also, keep an eye out for earthquakes by pipelines, power grids (lines and stations), even railroad tracks.

Summed up.. an x-class flare facing earth has occurred, it takes 2-3 days for the charged particles w/solar wind to arrive. Once it arrives, we watch for an additional 2-3 days for an earthquake and volcanic increase. Next 7 days basically.
