Was the Russian retaliation for these major Ukraine attacks on Russia acceptable and expected by Ukraine? Will this type of strategy by both countries simply continue or is there a learning curve to some new behavior where less death and destruction occurs?

Crazy but...was Ukraine's motivation for it's attacks inside of Russia actually to provoke a large deadly destructive response by Russia on Ukraine? Were these large Russian retaliations desired by Ukraine so that Ukraine could then be more likely to receive money and weapons from the West? Not sure.
