Kidney damage is not an adverse reaction to distressed swimmer rescues.

Acute Kidney Injury can have many causes - drugs, internal bleeding, toxins.

it sometimes reverses itself, often not.

Not rare among near-drowning patients.
Results: Ninety-five patients with the diagnosis of near-drowning in seawater were treated. Forty-two of these patients (43%) developed ND-AKI and 17 (18%) were classified as AKI Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes stages 2 to 3. ND-AKI was associated with the need for resuscitation and mechanical ventilation, with the calculated seawater volume ingestion (extrapolated from rising plasma sodium) and with the degree of acidemia, lactemia, and ventilatory failure. This series and 28 additional published cases of ND-AKI in the literature showed an overall male predisposition.

Don’t know the “science” but excess water in lungs leads to

some organ failure !

It has to do with swimming in salt water too close to the edge of Flat Earf.

Likely the ingestion of massive amounts of sodium from the seawater. Some areas of the ocean are more salty than others.

I waded in one time, at an island, and the water was so salty, it bleached out my swimsuit. A suit I had only worn once, looked like it had seen an entire summer, never mind the salt deposits that were left on my skin when the water evaporated -- yuck.

He may have been in a very salty area.
