I remember back in the Art Bell days there was an X-40 something.

That was cool. I could see the Aurora in New Mex.

What's after "X"?

It produced TWO, neither of which -thankfully- were Earth-facing. But the energy released can still cause both psychological and phsyical issues for many people, hence my warning.

As for your question? Since we are all pretty much powerless to combat them, I don't fear them. But preparing yourself mentally for a cataclysmic event can make a HUGE difference in your survival success rate!

And if I can get just ONE person to start taking solar activity more seriously, then this thread has served its intended purpose.

Nothing. "X" is the highest but go up numerically from there. And an aurora in NM IS exceptional... but hardly "cool" since it illustrates how much our atmosphere can be affected by these events.

X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected an X1.9-class solar flare (Jan. 9th @ 1850 UT). The source is hyperactive sunspot AR3184, described below in 'Where the action is.' A pulse of radiation caused a shortwave radio blackout centered mainly on South America:

Curious timing for shortwave blackout over south america... probably nothing though.

Didn't hear about it till now, but on space weather report I was watching at about 5:00AM over eggs and bacon, he warned that flare activity was ramping up today again.

Surprised nobody has posted anything, we’ve been bombarded since Friday. But it’s not like 12 years ago when constant x class were nailing us and everyone on glp were being in plants!

Lemme see if I can help out with that mission since I totally believe we're in for solar/space doom.

And wondering if anyone has any uncle or auntie Intel as to how our power grid is while this is going on. We are overdue for a Carrington class blast and a lot of folks tell me our infrastructure can handle that now.

x 1 is a nothing burger ...do some research and don't let the SOHO people yank your chain ... it's not earth directed, no CME reported ....

and yeah I was able to screen shot that x40 in 2001 (but that was two computers ago ... I just so happened to be on the website when it first showed up - it was not earth directed either - and very few people were even aware that it happened ...

after watching through this solar Minimun - cycle - it's nice to see an x flare ... I remember when CMEs were the main topic, and there were 30 x class flares every day ... no big deal - just means the sun is getting back to normal after its "rest" cycle (every 240 years)

Firstly, it was a 1.9; secondly, we've had two X-class flares in a single week, with more active sunspots ready to pop out something themselves.

And if you knew anything at all about solar storms, you'd realize that a back-to-back series of medium/large CME eruptions can cause as much damage -if not more so- than one really huge one.

For the record, Davidson only recently adopted his "doomy" outlook and in fact a few years ago would've dismissed the 12,000 year cycle... which has since been solidly proven to have merit. So you -and Solarham- can go blow it out of your collective asses.
