Pre-internet was a time of hopefulness and motivation accompanied by great in-person social interactions and fun. The current world is a cold lonely realm of paranoia and depression. If the internet was destroyed, we'd all wake up with a huge hangover, but ultimately the human species would begin to heal. |

Clearly taking an absurd comedic approach, but the themes are very true and real. Beyond some of the more obvious cultural destruction the internet caused like the death of shopping malls, video stores, etc it also fundamentally altered the development of youth, social interaction, and normal in-person relationships that help form empathy and other forms of healthy human psychology. Quoting: Lightman Mass shootings skyrocketed, childhood depression at an all-time high, misinformation, fake news, and impotency are just some of the many negative consequences of big tech putting profit over ethics and human values. I've heard the "this is just the way things are now" argument and I don't find it very compelling or intellectual. At what point do we hold big tech responsible for the disaster they have caused? They literally mutated the human species. Why have we allowed this to happen? It's hard for anyone who did not know the world before Internet's inception. I also think it's a similar to most abusive relationships. It's hard for the woman to admit they're in an abusive relationship. They make excuses for their abuser and hide the fact that they're struggling deep down. I think a number of newer generations deep down know something isn't right. The abuse starts the moment they go online so it's very much a part of who they are. |

She had been shopping at a local grocery store and when one of the staff learned her name was "Karen" they attacked her and physically assaulted her, screaming "she's a Karen!" as others joined in punching and kicking her for no other reason than some poorly conceived internet meme. She suffered a broken rib and a concussion from the attack. We're in the middle of pressing charges and filing a lawsuit against the store. The internet is poison. |
