Quoting: ParamedicUK [link to wwwnc.cdc.gov (secure)] Highly pathogenic avian influenza A (HPAI) subtype H5N1 has caused family case clusters, mostly in Southeast Asia, that could be due to human-to-human transmission. ….. Should one of these HPAI (H5N1) strains gain the capacity for sustained human-to-human transmission, the resulting outbreak, if not contained, would spread worldwide through the global transportation network more rapidly than adequate supplies of vaccine matched to the new variant could be manufactured and distributed (2,3). We analyzed data from 2 of the largest of the familial clusters to ascertain if human-to-human transmission took place, and if so, how transmissible the strain was. ….. We have presented statistical evidence that the strain of HPAI (H5N1) that caused the family cluster of human cases in northern Sumatra was spread from human to human and that the household SAR was 29%. This household SAR is similar to statistical estimates for interpandemic influenza A in the United States (12.7%–30.6%) (18,19). The mean incubation period of this strain appears to have been approx equal to 5 days, nearly twice as long as for past pandemic strains and current interpandemic strains of influenza. The CI for the estimated lower bound for the local R0 covers 1. Therefore, even though we determined that human-to-human transmission probably occurred, whether the virus was capable of sustained human-to-human transmission is not clear. Quoting: ParamedicUK No. I can now happily report that the microbiologists / virologists have swabs and samples from the coastal regions and river delta of Gambia and Senegal where the winter birds are getting hit hard. This is just a bad season for a strain that has been ebbing and flowing now for 14 years. The ingestion and thus infection via the consumption of infected birds is whats driving this surge. Going to be hard as hell to get a hold into the human population. Herd immunity and vaccine free is the only way…… |

[link to www.dailymail.co.uk (secure)] The world is 'nowhere near ready' for another pandemic, experts have warned amid mounting fears over an 'unprecedented' wave of bird flu sweeping the planet. Cases of the killer H5N1 strain have already jumped from birds to mammals. It has sparked huge concern among top virologists that the deadly pathogen is now one step closer to spreading in humans — a hurdle which has so far stopped it from triggering a pandemic. A senior Government adviser today claimed the situation 'is transforming quite fast on a global scale'. Herd immunity and vaccine free is the only way…… |

Surveillance based on clinical testing data and systems designed for seasonal influenza monitoring are unlikely to detect rare emerging influenza events. There is insufficient information to assess the occurrence of limited human to human transmission such as transmission within households. Assessment The avian influenza outbreak in the UK is assessed as at risk level 3*. The apparent transmission between mink is of significant concern but there is no clear evidence that this has continued in mammalian species since the initial outbreak. The UK assessment is consistent with the international picture with the same or similar viruses detected in multiple regions, evidence of mammalian spillover, but very few detected human infections. At present, there are no indicators of increasing risk to human health, however this is a low confidence assessment. The risk assessment is dynamic and requires regular review during this period of unusually high levels of transmission in birds with mammalian spillover. ParamedicUK (OP) User ID: 85217577 ![]() 02/10/2023 06:42 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bird flu outbreak in mink sparks concern about spread in people. A variant of H5N1 influenza that can spread between mammals could pose an increased risk to people and wild animals. [link to www.nature.com (secure)] An outbreak of avian influenza on a mink farm in Spain provides the strongest evidence so far that the H5N1 strain of flu can spread from one infected mammal to another. The outbreak of H5N1 flu, reported in Eurosurveillance on 19 January1, occurred on an American mink (Neovison vison) farm in Carral in October 2022. Genetic sequencing showed that the animals were infected with a new variant of H5N1, which includes genetic material from a strain found in gulls, as well as a genetic change known to increase the ability of some animal-flu viruses to reproduce in mammals. The new variant puts bird flu in “uncharted territory”, says Wendy Puryear, a virologist at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Researchers have warned that, unless careful precautions are taken, the disease might eventually spread among people. Herd immunity and vaccine free is the only way…… |
