I gotta admit, if the OT stands alone, apart from the NT, it depicts a hellish world of barbarity and darkness ruled by a Demiurge-like entity

Sometimes I have trouble harmonizing the OT God with the Jesus of the NT.

What would you think of the OT if the NT didn't exist? What would be your assessment of the God it depicts?

The OT is filled with war and barbarity and senseless cruelty. From Man and God alike. A nightmare world. I find very little mercy and compassion in the OT God.

If the OT foreshadows Jesus and the coming of a Messiah..what verses do this..besides Isaiah ch. 53?

I'm just confused today. My faith is being tried.

The OT goes straight from 400 years of slavery in Egypt..to the Israelites slaughtering everyone in the land God leads them to. And after that, it's nothing but failure after failure from the Israelites..even worshipping the false Gods of the land. I never understood that.

I feel like I'm playing devil's advocate. I'm not really trying to..I guess I'm just looking for guidance and wisdom from people more experienced with the Bible.

Maybe the nature of Man really IS that corrupt. It just makes me wonder why God eould have wasted his time even creating this world.

Is it meant to demonstrate that His Love and Mercy surpasses our limited human understanding?

I'm a double minded man apparently.

I go back and forth every day reading the NT and thinking God is so merciful and loving..to questioning if He may actually be a Demiurge type entity.

I'm just tired of His silence in the face of so much evil. Hasn't the point been made yet that man is evil and corrupt? How many more must be born and suffer?

So you haven’t read proverbs or psalms or how can you say it’s barbaric? This only means trolling against the OT and gaslighting.
Either it’s real or it’s not. But it probably is.

Proverbs is just a book of wisdom and a guide for living.

Good point on Psalms, though.

I'm not gaslighting. That's your own cynicism to think that.

That's just perception based on pop culture. If you actually read, and read to understand, i.e. study scripture, Yahweh isn't the angry, cruel God He's made out to be, and Jesus isn't the pushover He's made out to be. Both are loving and kind and merciful, and neither are to be trifled with.

If you read carefully, the inhabitants of Canaan were not human. They were a resurgence of the corrupt flesh, descendants of the Nephilim, which existed before the flood. Abominations that needed to be removed

Re: I gotta admit, if the OT stands alone, apart from the NT, it depicts a hellish world of barbarity and darkness ruled by a Demiurge-like entity
If you read the OT objectively, the OT is about genetics\DNA. It's about preparing for OUR redeemer. If you do not believe you need the Messiah then it probably makes little sense. Our fault we needed the Messiah, not God's fault.

Or do you wish to continue on with the world the way it's going now, with man in control? It doesn't really look good.

As the posters above noted, read Psalms, Proverbs to understand who God is and you may be surprised. You can reject God and Christ but He's still your God

Which part?

Genesis, where God immediately tells humans how He's going to send a savior, right after they fall?

Or all of the prophets that talk about the coming Messiah? Like Isaiah, who even tells how Jesus is going to die?

Or how about Exodus, where God shows how He will lead the faithful into the promised land, the coming new Eden, in a sneak peek? Or, while in the wilderness, God has them look at a bronze snake, the symbol of sin, upon a stake, so that they won't die?

Or maybe all of the psalms that talk about who Jesus will be, and what He will do.

Or Ezekiel, who predicted the very year Jesus came?
