Going by known sources, the Cobalt supply rate cannot keep up with the growth in EV vehicles.

And its production certainly does not match any view of a Utopian future.

15,000 Africans working in a mining pit using the most primitive methods imaginable to mine the ore.

Musk intends to eliminate cobalt in battery cathodes by changing battery technology to use less costly, less constrained and more socially acceptable metals such as nickel and manganese.

Of course the Earth is a big place, and I'm sure with time they will find more sources.

Conflict minerals in Africa are similar to the so called "Blood Diamonds". Cobalt certainly should qualify (although it does not appear to be on their list), along with the other minerals (Gold, Tantalum, Tungsten and Tin), that the job-killing Dodd-Frank Law used to place controls on. Trump supposedly relieved industry of this reporting, but I see it still seems to be required.

Like most such laws, they tend to be circumvented with the exchange of some money.

Musk's attempts to eliminate the use of Cobalt.

[link to www.theverge.com (secure)]

"Cobalt is a key component of batteries. It’s also the most expensive material in the battery and mined under conditions that often violate human rights. As a result, scientists and startups are rushing to create a cobalt-free battery.

Musk’s “next-gen” claim is a vague phrase that doesn’t set out a definite timeline, so it’s impossible to know when he’ll deliver — but don’t expect it to be in the next couple of years."

Kind of reminds me of the other not so pleasant aspect of our modern world.

Burning E-wastes and hand picking the shiny bits out of the ashes.

Do you know much about the 'chitin' battery?

I prefer snow crabs. WIth lots of drawn butter, for that extra battery goodness.

I even have my own crab eating pocket tool.

"Dirty" Green Energy.

What a joke and millions are believing it.

So after all of these minerals are mined then they have to be refined ,,, just like raw oil.

In extremely high temperature kilns which take so much electricity to run that wind or solar just cannot produce.

After 10 years or so of repeated battery charges these batteries fail, just like your phones. And because of the assembly process to build a Li Battery for vehicles its impossible and not economic to recycle but small amounts sending the left over scrap right back into Mother Natures backside.

Not to mention the limited supplies estimated worldwide to start with...

A financial boondoggle is all it is.

They only show you the part of the new technology that they are trying to sell you on. Don't look behind the curtain!

They need tons of oil to harvest it

I see they have developed the technology to use hemp to make batteries, that rival anything that is out there with a significantly less environmental impact
