Cassettes were common. LP vinyl records were too.

Some of my friends' parents had 8 track players.

But cassettes were the main thing. I remember when shitty cassette players would try to eat the tape inside the cassette and you'd have to fish it out of the machine and manually wind the tape back into the cassette with your finger in the little wheels...

and if it broke...you put some tape on it and wound it up and it still worked!

Betamax is close. I vaguely remember 8 tracks
And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. (Matthew 24:4-7).

Earliest I remember were 8 tracks in automobile dashboards.

But shortly after that came cassettes.

I also remember grandparents showing some reel-to-reel home videos once above the fireplace mantle.

Also remember the reels in sch-sch-sch-sch-sch[press release]reels in school.
