Free apples, plums, walnuts, blackberries, all used to grow in public places, too bad people cannot plant these things ALL OVER THE PLACE to allow foraging. |

I planted wild plums on my property over 30 years ago . very tasty indeed and the birds like to nest in them and the rabbits like to lay under them . |

As for fruit if it grows wild in the uk ive more than likely eaten it. havent got a clue what you mean with the pen Last Edited by Scottiep123 on 03/16/2023 10:56 PM |

But I risked life to scale the fence and dogs to gorge on plums. 1970s |

We didn't know who lived there, but they never said anything to us. Those were the best apples I've ever eaten. |

I remember looking out my window and seeing a kid in my apple tree, picking away and when I asked what he was doing he told me his mother sent him to get enough apples to make a kuchen. How could I say no? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81448642 No citrus. Never lived in a warm place. Apples didn't do well where i grew up. The apples had worms if you didn't spray them and the trees eventually died. And it got just a tad too cold for citrus. It was fairly easy to find huckle berries and wild grapes. And wild honey was the food of the gods if you could find it in a place you could deal with. The huckle berries have all but disappeared. Factory farmed blueberries do well though i would think they were related. |

Blight hit them starting back in the 70's. I haven't seen any in years. There were even different types. Different trees had different flavors and sizes. We knew where the good ones were and gorged on them as kids. That and dew berries. Always kept an eye out for snakes around them they would seen to congregate in blackberry brambles for some reason. Well, I'm usually off the trail, to be honest. Sometimes, I'll sneak a few berries out of the metro parks. I also have a few black berry bushes at home to snack from. |

Quoting: RestoreTheAnger Of course. We've got loads of apple trees, a few pear trees, 4 large cherries, too many plum trees to count, walnut, hazelnut and chestnut trees, raspberry and black berry bushes, and strawberries. Fresh fruit starts in April with the strawberries and May for the raspberries. We pick the last of the raspberries at the end of October/start of November. Apples are ripe from the end of August, the later ones are still fine on the trees until December. Then we switch to the ones we picked for storage. Plums come as a glut in September and loads go to the chickens. The cherries are endless throughout June and into July. And the nuts last a long long time. I love growing fruit because it comes back every year with very little effort on my part, unlike the veggies which are constant work. |
