The island of Manhattan is now almost 9 million people. If you add together all the five boroughs the general area is about 20 million people. It depends on where you put the boarders. Then you have several other major cities within 100 miles, Philadelphia being New York's sister city. Philly is so close many people live there and commute into NYC daily by Amtrack, it's a shorter ride than living on the East end of Long Island. That is frequently a 4 hour 100 mile drive into the city now, basically not doable anymore. It's worth every penny for the 150 dollars per person helicopter ride from the 33erd st heliport to the Hamptons or Riverhead.
I left the NYC area in 2005, it wasn't livable anymore at my income level. When the city hired a Bird Nazi patrol in the parks, that was truly the last straw.
