No one plays bass this way, not even jaco or victor. Another bass player with an identity crisis. He clearly identifies as a guitarist! LOL Lol it’s 2023, my man. You can identify as whatever Let’s make it 110. XIV |

Tie Nylon User ID: 85108001 Canada 03/23/2023 10:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There are a lot of guitar players that can play well, but what is important, is to be able to WRITE the original music that people enjoy hearing them play. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80068884 I like "tone" players, like Mark Knopfler, who can extract so much information from a single note. Good call. Love Knopfler. Over the years, I've probably stolen more technique from him than from anyone else. Or attempted to. Live not by lies. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 84500741 United States 03/23/2023 10:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Pastorius was a great bass player and was creative, but very few would hire him to perform the core role of a bassist - 1. play the root on the "one" and something pretty that leads out of and into chords and 2. make the people want to get out of their seats and dance. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84500741 Pastorius played bass like a lead guitar. That's NOT what most bands are looking for in a sideman. Pastorius was also out of his mind. It was his complete lack of self-awareness that got him killed. Sad, but true. |

Still great loss when Eddie passed. Same year Neal Peart passed. I bet they’re rocking in Heaven right now. |

Easily two of the best females ive ever seen play bass. |

Quoting: Tie Nylon Tommy Emmanuel would tell you the answer is Chet Atkins. [link to youtu.be (secure)] Certainly one of the best. He was sweeping, and hybrid picking a generation before anyone else. Except maybe Django Reinhart. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85471931 I wouldnt say the average teenager player, but the bar is certainly higher these days than it was 50 years ago, true i know what you are saying. The technical level of amateur players in bars now is like what top tier 60's and 70's players in major bands were like. Absolutely thousands of incredible musicians on youtube that are better than ill ever be, even if i spend another 10 years playing 10 hours a day and ive been playing 20 years already, some of them have only been playing 5-10 years too so are barely in their 20's, its absolutely insane. Its like mixed matial arts, MMA was hilarious back when the UFC started, half the roster now who are just contenders would absolutely murder bruce lee in a cage fight, some stuff like BJJ simply elevated the game, thats what happened with guitar, everybody was improved by the notion of just what was possible. |

Much more than technical chops, which he has, but melodic songwriting, clean vibes, getting his Fender Strat to sound so amazing (clarity from high to low frequency). He explains how he accidentally wired his Dimarzio Cruiser pickup backwards in the rig rundown. Surfs up John 8:32 |

No it hasn’t. Nobody knows who these clowns are cause they can’t write anything worth listening to. Which is why no one knows who they are but Guitar Center employees. One of the better Zappa players. The only guitar player I go to the front to watch play. Here's a few quick samples, dig deep, he's been around since the mid 90's. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 19078916 United Kingdom 03/23/2023 10:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I struggle playing knopfler because similar to django and tony iommi i have missing fingers from an accident, but in my case its actually on my picking hand so doing the classical style double stopp/dyadds piccatto style that knofler does a lot where he plucks two strings out at once can be a bit of a pain for me if im doing it whilst finger picking or using a pick as i simply dont have the fingers spare, hold a plecktrum and then try to pluck two strings at once missing parts of 2 fingers, its pretty hard. Its why i settled into a lot of funk style bass playing but i cant three finger walk, but i can slap and pluck no problems, my fretting hand is like a guitar players so im one of those bass players who is really a guitar player lmao. I play piano, keyboards too, and drums and struggle too, always wanted to transition to upright bass, i have an electric upright in my collection but i cant really afford a quality expensive upright bass, a good one can cost a couple of thousand. |

Players today have enormous advantages. Nobody pre-internet, for example, could just go to Ultimate Guitar and grab the tab for a song, we actually had to learn on our own, and I believe that gave us a better understanding of our instruments. The harder you have to work at something, the more you'll learn from it and the more rewarding it is. And no matter how good you are, there is always someone far better. Probably some kid in Japan that you find on YouTube one day and are left thinking "How the hell is that even possible?" edit: What drives me nuts about young players that learn from internet instructors is they all learn that damned CAGED system. Ugh! Last Edited by Tie Nylon on 03/23/2023 10:46 AM Live not by lies. |
