We've always had tornadoes in the spring.

However, tornado alley has shifted to the east. Generally dixie alley (the southern midwest and south) was active Feb-March, but the intensity of tornadoes along with their parent supercell thunderstorms have increased in the south while decreasing in the plains where tornado alley used to be extremely active this time of year.

There exists a second “tornado alley” in the United States. Located in the southeastern US encompasses the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Tennessee and Georgia. The southeast hasn’t been associated with the same accolades and perception due to the trees and hills and viewing difficulty that comes with the region. There was a record number of tornadoes in Oklahoma just a few years ago, and set an all time record.

Your perception? Massive and deadly tornadoes have been common and frequent all throughout US history. Most of the worst ones were long ago including clusters that killed thousands of people. In general large F5s have declined over time, we build structures that are more resistant and have better action plans than before. Since powerful storms have declined, that means someday they will increase, but that is how things go.

Part of the fact that there may be more frequent and stronger tornadoes east of TX is that the GoM water temperatures have been increasing over the years. This lofts more moisture in the air. It then is pulled north when a cold front, surface low moves west to east.

Watch out this hurricane season. Same effect will cause stronger and more frequent canes in the GoM.

An average of 92 tornadoes occur in the U.S. each March.

Heard last night that residents were saying there was no warning. Sirens didn't sound.

Killer tornadoes every spring for the 50+ odd years I can remember.

A large tornado impacted Rolling Fork, Mississippi. We had a very close range intercept of it and noticed a strange, bright object being picked up and carried around the tornado.

Nothing is any different. A big tornado happened...Again.
