do you mean you're a commercial professional driver in CA for a delivery or pickup, or are you sleeping in a pickup truck? If commercial probably be fine (though probably not legal in CA) as long as you aren't searched or do anything else wrong.

If say sleeping and not operating the vehicle, meaning parked and not in the driver's seat, under your pillow is only safe solution out there. You're not traveling or away from the vehicle which requires them to be locked and stowed separately.
