Anonymous Coward User ID: 12762317 ![]() 03/30/2023 11:47 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know there are UH-60s (the 'u' standing for "utility") Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85166483 these were HH-60s What does the "H" designation in place of "u" mean ? that it's a Special Ops / Task Force 160 bird ? Specialized equipment for S&R, personnel recovery, etc. <less than 50%> [link to www.af.mil (secure)] Mission The primary mission of the HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter is to conduct day or night personnel recovery operations into hostile environments to recover isolated personnel during war. The HH-60G is also tasked to perform military operations other than war, including civil search and rescue, medical evacuation, disaster response, humanitarian assistance, security cooperation/aviation advisory, NASA space flight support, and rescue command and control. Features The Pave Hawk is a highly modified version of the Army Black Hawk helicopter which features an upgraded communications and navigation suite that includes integrated inertial navigation/global positioning/Doppler navigation systems, satellite communications, secure voice, and Have Quick communications. <end clip> Quite a few incidents have been blamed on the night vision goggles. Not sure if that will be the case here, we'll see. I worked on on these in the late 80's and saw some crazy shit come back from the field. One in particular came back from a place where they were not supposed to be with a 3 inch hole blown in a main blade and the pilots still managed to land it. These airplanes could really take a beating. |

Interesting .. do you know anything about the Blackhawks that were crashing due to electro-magnetic interference issues ? I'm pretty sure it was UH-60s anyway, around 1988 or so I think they were grounded for a while until a fix was made |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41033585 You have a backup battery on the military nods… Part of preflight is to test your backup battery by switching to backup battery mode prior to takeoff. wow, good idea, to have a built-in battery backup, especially for aviators -- NODs didn't have those back in my time had to carry extras ... and of course privates would always manage to find some way to "lose" them |
