Realistic procedural forest made in Unreal Engine 5.2
Epic recently added a procedural toolset called PCG (Procedural Content Generation) in the 5.2 preview branch and I spent the past few days testing it out.

This forest is 100% procedural... meaning, other than programming the procedural network, no artist intervention was needed and I didn't place anything by hand. A set of rules are established to determine where objects are placed/where plants can grow and then with a push of a button you can generate the whole thing... a real time saver.

Doing something like this manually would take a week or more.

The setup can be randomized and can adapt to any incoming landscape.

Youtube compression is pretty shitty so I'll post an imgur link showing the level of detail that exists everywhere in the forest... all the leaves, twigs, grass, ground cover plants, etc are generated procedurally.

Can it be used to churn things out? Sure. Can it be used to automate or speed up some of the mundane parts of the creative process, allowing people/artists to spend their time on what really makes these worlds/environments unique? Absolutely.

Totally.

It I think it will lower the bar for entry for less skilled artists, and it will push the really good artists out there to new heights... they can focus their attention on more important things than baking lighting or placing assets by hand.

I envision AI developing a game and in real time as someone starts to play said game the AI will just stay a head of the player deciding to choose paths for the player to follow with full control as it sees the outcome of the game.

UEAI, Please generate a mixed evergreen and deciduous forest on the slope of of a hill, make escarpments, cliffs and rocks.

Make it early spring, make it foggy, slightly rainy and the ground muddy. Create the appropriate wildlife. Please observe standard texture size and suitable polygon counts for current get console games and mid-range computer hardware.

Yes, if this were set up like an actual level in a game I would add sounds but it would basically be lots of little audio clips being triggered when you get close to things or when events are triggered by the player.

Honestly, just an ambient loop with footsteps and rustling to simulate walking does a pretty good job.

Right now, it's just an environment.

Here's a clip showing how the procedural generation works.

I reduced the size of the forest to about 100 m/sq to make it go faster but here I'm moving the volume that the forest will be generated in and you can see it recalculate and place the assets on a new section of the terrain.
