LONDON -- An Australian man has quite literally struck gold. He discovered a rare gold nugget worth about 240,000 Australian dollars, or about $160,000, while scanning Victoria’s “Golden Triangle” with his metal detector. The man, who did not wish to be named, was scanning the area between Ballart, Bendigo and St. Arnaud, which was popular Victoria’s famous gold rush in the 1850s, when his Minelab Equinox 800 metal detector started to beep. It was there that he unearthed a 4.6 kg rock, which contained 2.6 kg of gold. Inquisitive about the rock’s worth, the man put it in his backpack to took it to Darren and Leanne Kamp at Lucky Strike Gold in Geelong, a city nearby, for appraisal. Lucky Strike Gold told ABC News that in 43 years of working in the industry evaluating and prospecting gold, they have never encountered a gold nugget of this size. Continued... Is that on the Gold Coast? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77680194 ![]() 04/12/2023 09:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Read this article yesterday, Tuesday. Decided to look into these Minelab metal detectors. Ended up ordering a Minelab Equinox 900 metal detector yesterday morning on Amazon. Was surprised it arrived this morning almost 24 hours later (and I live out in the country too). I read the manual last night. I plugged it in and charged it up. I put it in Field 1 mode and went outside and did a background Noise Cancel. Then I checked around my driveway (gravel/dirt) and marked some spots that were displaying different discrimination scale readings. By the numbers, I suspected foil wrappers and probably some coins. I marked these spots and went back inside. Went out an hour later and got same readings at the same spots. I did this to reassure myself that this wasn't random noise. Decided to check the highest reading (88) and found a 2003 US quarter about an inch under the soil. Then I checked a few of the lowest readings (23-26) spots and found pieces of foil/plastic candy wrappers. I check around some more and identified other spots where I'll most likely find coins. I marked them but didn't feel like digging right now. Most appear near the surface. I may leave them and let my grandkids find and dig for them on their next visit. I'm quite impressed with these Minelab Equinox line of metal detectors. The build quality is really good. They can be very accurate and precise too. The 900 is the more advanced and capable model. It's actually easy to use, but you do need to read the manual to understand the different modes and settings and how to interpret the readings. It will take some experience before you know you're doing everything right in order to trust your readings. The better you get at selecting the right settings, the less chance of digging up trash. Select the wrong settings and you could miss detecting various things. I really like this particular model. It is more discriminating and flexible in its configuration. That makes finding valuable stuff instead of trash much more reliable. And it arrived surprisingly fast too. It was a beautiful day for this outside too. I'll have some fun with this around here. There's lots of old pioneer sites to explore around here with this device. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 84803360 ![]() 04/14/2023 06:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So far, I've found a LOT of coins with this metal detector buried in my gravel covered dirt driveway. I think about 40 of them but didn't count them. Most are pennies. This detector is pretty good. I found a dime at about 7 inches under some hard packed dirt & gravel. The detector coil started detecting it 4 inches away from the outside edge of the coil too. It also precisely pinpointed the spot over the dime too. Thanks to the OP for posting that article link. It's what got my interest peaked in looking into getting a metal detector again. I got interested many years ago, but what was available back then didn't seem very good. I got the impression I would be digging up a lot of trash with them. This Equinox 900 has the capability of being very discriminating. It has a lot of target profiles programmed into it to help you determine what you might have detected. It allows you to detect only a target profile matching what you're specifically interested in searching for. Of course you'll miss detecting other things while concentrating on only finding coins, for example. But you can obviously detect all metals too. But if you're in a trashy field, such as city parks, you'll detect a LOT of pieces of foil and foil laminated plastic candy wrappers. You won't waste time digging up junk if you're only interested in coins. Foil, for example, well have a different target ID than coins (i.e. quarters displayed an 88 or 89). I've noticed pennies were around the 54 to 60 range. I also bought a Pro Find 35. That's really a a must have device when metal detecting. Without one, you'll have to hand check every bit of soil you dig up. You'll need to break up every clump of dirt you shovel. If you don't, you'll not find the coins. You could probably use your Equinox detector to check each scoop of shovel of dirt, but you'll need to get up off your knees and stand up to use that thing after every shovel load you dump on the ground. The Pro Find 35 chirps when it gets within an inch of the coin while you stir the probe through the dirt you dig up. The Equinox 900 has more target IDs than the other Equinox models, and that's a big plus. I know the chances were high when I see an 88 or 89 target ID number while searching around where cars park in my driveway. And it always was a quarter. I did dig up a large bottle cap that displayed a 90 target ID. I also found some other stuff like beer bottle caps in the lower number range. While this metal detector is pretty good in helping you determine what it detects, it's still an experienced judgement call too. And your judgement is influence a lot by where you are searching. Of course you'll find coins around spots where people sit down and get up. Coins often fall out of pockets. Searching around park benches is one good spot to look for coins. A spot where they might pull their car keys out of their pocket is another. The Equinox 900 has a nice back-lit display too. This allows you to sneak around digging in prohibited places late at night (lol). It pinpoints the spot to dig really well. You could dig a quarter out of the ground within a 3 inch hole. But that might be difficult if it's like 8 inches under the dirt. The coins I've been finding in my driveway varied from just under the surface down to about 7 inches so far. I moved here 2.5 years ago. The property was developed in 1977. So it's doubtful I'll find artifacts near the surface prior to that date. It appears the entire yard was plowed level at that time. But I've thousands of acres of forest around me that was popular with native Americans and pioneer settlers long ago. While hiking in the forest I found a stone fireplace, obviously the only thing left standing from some long ago pioneer log cabin homestead. I plan to check that site this summer, as well as many others. Anyhow, having some fun learning this stuff. And there's beautiful spring weather outside this week. It's gonna be cooler and rainy next week. But this metal detector is waterproof and completely submersible down to 15 feet. So, I could go digging in mud next week too. This thing could pay for itself if you start searching heavily populated spots, like beaches, parks, etc. With the ability to concentrate on, for examine quarters, you'll be wasting no time digging up trash and worthless items. You can also use this metal detector to find gold nuggets in a rivers and Arizona desert land. It has a special custom config setting just for gold searching. |
