Generation Z leads in home ownership, beating out millennials & Gen X (FORBES) | |

They essentially play bank for their own children, which is exactly what I've been saying a parent should do if they can, for years now. Then it's in the family. Quoting: Feathery Gen Z is '97-'10. That means only a small portion will have boomer parents, and then only the youngest of the boomers. Most Gen Z will have Gen X and Millennial parents. Right but people here a very math challenged I would say it is more, that people don't know what the arbitrary years are for academia and medias made up generations. The people supposedly classed in the same generation don't even really fit together and aren't really the same. It's all just arbitrary, made up bullshit. I partly agree. But there is some commonality. Gen X was the first electronic generation. Etc, If nothing else the commonality is place in time. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84370734 Is it because they are further generationally distanced from boomers? Millennials dealt with two economic crashes and negative wage growth that spanned the first decade of their working lives... Don't worry now that this is about to happen to zoomers too they'll get absolutely screwed too. What is about to happen to genZ is worse. They are going to get their anti-American anti-capitalist communist utopia and the state will just seize all their houses and force them to rent. They will own nothing and be happy. Half of them won't even raise a fuss, because they have to save the planet. “The rules are simple: they lie to us, we know they're lying, they know we know they're lying, but they keep lying to us, and we keep pretending to believe them.” Elena Gorokhova, A Mountain of Crumbs |

Quoting: Matrix Doctor I hope things stay afloat in our economy but we are on the brink of a nasty situation for everyone. I completely agree with you. Every generation has had trouble hanging into homes at one time or another. 30 year mortgages are tough to survive as you need lots of good luck and hard work to survive it. My own father has to keep 3 jobs for awhile to endure hardship times that most people see during 30 years. If someone buys a home in their 20s chances are good that before they are 50 they or someone in the family will have an expensive medical need or a lawsuit of some kind. Then, even if they do manage to pay off the home very few young people realize how expensive just the ever rising annual property tax bill is along with constant rising home insurance and utilities will be. Then there is the normal aging of the homes, most right about the 15 year mark of a new homes age will require massive updating, the central air/heaters wear out, the roof needs replacing. Most people at this time have their mortgage note rewritten to afford the costs which kicks the home payoff down the road even further, at this time payoff may not happen now until the owner is in their 60s. I don't see many new young home buyers with enough gumption, determination and stamina and basic goodluck to last a 30 year mortgage. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84370734 Is it because they are further generationally distanced from boomers? It's a misleading study. It's comparing Gen Z at age 20 TODAY, with Gen X when they were 20 (30+ years ago). Gen Z age ranges from: 8 years old - 23 year old (today) The 'study' attributes higher Gen Z home ownership to the extremely low interest rates during the pandemic, along with the free money the government was handing out. It doesn't factor in the much higher foreclosure rate that's happened over the last 6 months on Gen Z home owners. Here's the RedFin 'study': [link to www.redfin.com (secure)] Kind of figured the numbers were some what manipulated. In my early 20s I was too busy moving around and living in different countries to settle a buy a house. |

I think the youngest of the adult generations realize that a traditional job isn't going to cut it nowadays, you gotta have side-hustles and multiple income streams. I think the Gen Z'ers are doing better because they're utilizing the internet to make money. And yeah, being more distant from the boomer mentality, e.g. "find a good job and work your way up the ladder", will make you more successful. The U-Tubers really found a goldmine with their merchandise sales of T-shirts and mugs. They probably don't even have to keep much stock on hand, and they act just like a middleman, and just place the orders for their customers, and they get shipped directly from the manufactures. Now that I don't have cable, I watch a ton of U-Tube channels. |

The problem with making money this way is that it isn’t sustainable, it’s too volatile and not stable. the REAL problem with it is it's inevitably a FUCKING CON. cons don't contribute anything, in face, devalue the money. look it up on wiki on inflation mechanisms. if cons are paid, nothing was generated and if this keeps up, everyone has money and there's no produce to buy. That's for sure, for working stiffs with no other sources of income. Even with rental properties and flipping houses it can be difficult, with all the competition out there. I'm lucky in that I inherited 3 properties, 2 through my wife's grandmother, and 1 through my parents. Those properties put me way ahead of the game. It's great not having a mortgage, and only $250 a month in property taxes. ![]() |

The title of the thread and the article are misleading. They're saying that Gen Z at age 25 is more likely to own a home than Millennials / Gen X when they were 25. Which makes absolute sense, given that neither of those two other generations were experiencing near 0% interest rates when they were 25. Not to mention, remote positions have made it easier for people to obtain homes, as they no longer need to reside in the city their job is located in. Giving people freedom to move to more affordable / rural area's. |
