Anonymous Coward User ID: 283565 ![]() 04/28/2008 08:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is a few things wrong with the article. Although the article is dated April 27, much of the info is from fall of 2007. I went looking and found this: School Keeps Christmas, Halloween; Adds Ramadan Muslim Mother Asks That Ramadan Be Celebrated Along With Other Holidays In Oak Lawn Schools OAK LAWN, Ill. (CBS) ― Following a school board meeting where parent complained about what the saw as an assault on traditional American celebrations, an Oak Lawn school district has decided to keep observing Halloween and Christmas, but only on the condition that Muslim holiday Ramadan is celebrated as well. The school district had asked principals to tone down all holiday celebrations after a Muslim mother requested that her children be separated from others during lunch for the Ramadan fast. But after heated remarks from many parents at the meeting Tuesday, the school board changed its position. "Everything is staying the same," school board member Dave Lis said. "Christmas is still Christmas, and Halloween is still Halloween." [link to cbs2chicago.com] I know it doesn't fit the agenda of the person who wrong the Post Chronicle article, but the whole story should be reported. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 324603dang stupid. Teacher questions Muslim practices at charter school Will she be fired? Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TIZA) is a K-8 charter school in Inver Grove Heights. Charter schools are public schools and by law must not endorse or promote religion. Evidence suggests, however, that TIZA is an Islamic school, funded by Minnesota taxpayers. . . . The school shares the headquarters building of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, whose mission is "establishing Islam in Minnesota." Imagine the outcry from liberals if this were a Christian or Jewish school getting taxpayer support... But of course, it's quite okay to publicly fund a religious school if its doctrines are anti-Western and anti-American... |

Schools can create their own generic celebrations that would bond the members in to friendships! lately christmas had gotten ugly arguing with everyone that it is all about Jesus and non christians cannot participate as they want to. christamss tryed to be generic but it is now very boring to me and seems to be only special to christians and retailers! so it serves everyone to not do anything that will create separations and argueing anyway. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 324603dang stupid. Actually, no religion in public schools is a relatively new thing. When I was a kid, at school, we bowed our heads at our desks as the teacher led us in prayer first thing every morning. We sang Christmas carols and religious songs at school. That's the way it was back then. Showing my age, I guess... We can argue whether that was right or wrong, but I'll tell you one thing, back in those days kids were not fucked up like they are now. The main point I'm trying to make is that what younger people spout these days as if it's gospel (no pun intended), is not the way it has always been. 50 years ago, people would've said "since when does anyone not follow religious rites in a public school?" They would have been aghast at the thought of no religion in a public school. Perspective. |
