Almost all employees anywhere only care about the paycheck.

I only care about the paycheck. Sure, I wear a smile and pretend to care about my job, boss, and coworkers, but it's only so that I'll keep getting paychecks.

A job is where you provide a service and receive payment in return. It shouldn't be thought of as anything more than a simple business arrangement.

The ONLY employees I know who would "Work For Free" are pilots who fly the big airplanes. They LOVE to fly, and as one put it to me he can't believe he actually gets paid to go have FUN!!

The vast MAJORITY of government employees do not provide any net benefit to civil society. They are parasitical in nature. As an example, there are multitudes of "administrators" that provide no real purpose.

The difference between the government and the marketplace(which is what you are describing) is that the government very often subsidizes services or activities that are of no benefit. BILLIONS are wasted each year. There are very few blacksmiths or stagecoach drivers these days because there is no market for them. A lot of occupations have lost numbers in the workplace/market because there is less demand for them. So the market eliminates those positions. The government though does not have any mechanism to correct for this and do not need income like a business to assess whether they should modify their workforce for example. Maybe the market needs less welders in the workplace for awhile but more electricians for example. The market will determine such things while the government simply forces taxation to pay the salaries of government employees that provide no benefit. Many of them are literal parasites and a drain on taxpayers.

Just to add to my post above...

Here in my state there was an issue that came up (perhaps school choice) and public school teachers across the state claimed a "Sick Day" and went to the state capital to protest.

Now, how many employers in the private market would tolerate such behavior?

The teachers basically falsified records and defrauded the public (taxpayers) with their little tantrum.

A lot of employers do not even have "sick days" anymore and many do not have pensions or affordable medical insurance. Government employees though usually have significantly better benefits (i.e. medical insurance) and retirement than most taxpayers will ever have.

The government employees are a political class and most of them feel entitled and superior.
