I wonder if psyllium fiber would work, or something that would "grab" it and take it out of the colon. Sometimes psyllium fiber can do that.

He started the runs Friday and was going to give him a couple more days, saw one bag come out Saturday and some vomiting then we knew what it was. He was lethargic sunday morning when vets are closed so had to take him to emergency. Up to 3k already for just iv and monitoring. They want 6-9k for surgery depending where the lodging is.

OMG!
I am so sorry.
Please don’t let him suffer for more than a few days.
I think it would be better to euthanize the poor dog, rather than let it suffer.
I know that I wouldn’t be able to do that to my dog….well, in this situation there really is not a choice.
10k is more than you or I could afford.

I am praying for you and your dog.
Prayer is powerful.
I have hope.

Please update.

That’s a terrible situation to be in , sorry!

I would call a few other vets and ask for second opinions.

Have they offered to give him something to help clear it out?

Putting a large amount of olive oil down his throat or something like that can help lubricate the bags passing but it may not help at this point. At least they could try.

Thank you. Prayers.

I guess there's a need for emergency veterinary clinics. I don't think a simple DVM misses many meals, and if he or she does, it's not because they're having to be thrifty.

But the emergency vets want to make a million dollars a year. No, a million a month. How about we try for a million a week?

More prayers. Keep us updated.

$10 grand is very high. I suspect they saw you coming.

$3 to $5 grand is typical cost for intestinal blockage surgery for pets.

Shop around and talk to pet store owners and a humane society near where you live to see if they know a Vet that can do the
surgery for less - They're in the know and you're not.

If you can't do the surgery and your dog is getting worse, have him put down. It's hard but the right thing to do.

Hope it works out for your little bud.

Not where I live it isn't, it's a major surgery. If he has them in his belly, I'd give him some hydrogen peroxide to see if he can puke them up.

Doggie will probably poop it out. Facilitate with some mineral oil.

Unless there is something sharp in spikey in the bag, you should be okay. Digs eat all kinds of shit -- sometimes literally.

My cat had a viral problem in his intestine, and one vet diagnosed it as a swallowed object that had to be removed via expensive surgery.

Re: Dog swallowed plastic bag, they want 10k for surgery!
Give ‘em a tapeworm pill

That was my fix for my dog whenever she ate something bad

If she would not eat… I temped her with POPCORN (extra real buttered) dropped on kitchen floor here and there so she thought she was being sneaky

Then once she got at least 10 popcorns

I gave her baked beans from the can - w bacon

Then is she was back on eating - usually was - I gave her regular dog food she loved the dry dog food and made sure she took extra water

And waited

Once she ate a whole long sock !

She was 7 Lbs then

And she pooped it out

Another time she ate the thick corner of a towel

She got feverish and hot and wouldn’t eat or drink much when she did this

I put Mollasses in warm water and fed her with a dropper

The MAGNESIUM in the Mollasses loosens the bowels

Then popcorn for bulk to push out what’s stuck

Once she was shitting blood and I asked the old farmer that had 900 cows

He said “Give her the wormer and whatever it is will come out”

The TAPEWORM medicine pills work the best -

Good luck

OP, where are you located? If you are in SE TX in the Houston-Beaumont area, I have a vet surgeon recommendation for you...A&M educated who has been practicing for 30 years. He performed a $10K (in Hou) surgery for less than $2K for one of my rescue dogs where he rebuilt shattered leg and pelvic bones. She now climbs fences. Ha!

Where are you located?

Was that a "friend price"? Or did you somehow negotiate it?

I've never heard of things like this being negotiable. More often than not, there's no warning at all as to whether we're talking $500 or $50,000. The only thing you know for sure is that the vet must think he or she is worth $25 or so per hour, and the Swiss-trained staff all take home six figures.

$10K is crazy! Last year my neighbor took her pitbull for similar- dog ate several tube socks and wasn't passing them and was getting worse and worse. She used our neighborhood vet (same vet we use) and surgery was under $3K.

I know you love your dog but if it was me if dog doesn't pass the bags and keeps getting worse I would put him out of his misery. Lots of better ways to spend $10K for your family and pets can be replaced. Might sound heartless but it's a pet not a human.

Dr. Daughter says that they quote $2500-$4000, depending on if its a long string of them and how many incisions into the GI tract they have to make. Says he could pass them, there's more risk if it was a long string of them. If he's vomiting or not eating, she'd be concerned.

This is a well-known emergency clinic in Cincinnati.

They have microbes now that rapidly breakdown plastics.
Perhaps some of these are nontoxic and inert to animals and would pass out with the dissolving plastic?
Plastic is oil based, so also, "oil solves oil." Perhaps the right inert oil would do the trick?

The problem is, is that it is/was an emergency situation that took place over the weekend when regular vets aren't open. And even if it was during the week, it typically takes a couple days at least to schedule an appointment. If you tell the vet it's an emergency, they will say go to an emergency clinic.

It's a tough situation.
