Calling BS on the evacuation alert. The only news sources reporting this are US sources.

Popo has been erupting since 1994. There are events of high activity and then it slows. Been going on for decades. The alert level was raised last week to Yellow level 3, which means the public should protect themselves from ash and not travel within 8 km of the volcano. Pyroclastic flows and ejection of incandescent material is expected within the exclusion zone. The Puebla city airport was closed due to ash fallout. Only the communities on the flanks of the volcano are under evacuation watch. They are used to this as it happens several times a year since the volcano became active in 94.

To be honest, this is nowhere near the most dangerous volcano in the area, Mexico City is ringed on 3 sides by volcanoes, and the most dangerous one that could wipe out large numbers of population is Xitle, also known as Chichinautzin to the southwest of the metropolitan area. The last time it erupted was around 300 AD, lava spread far and wide, the evidence of the catastrophe is seen on the grounds of the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) in the south part of Mexico City where you can see an ancient city mostly buried by the lava. Fortunately this one has not shown signs of waking.
