Did you know old houses have 'cricket' floors? You can tell by squeaking and groaning where people are.

I know exactly who is where in my house, and how many people are home, by the sounds of the squeaks and creaks. I have a solid wood house which was built before the war though, it's heavy duty and the beams are 12x12 inches. So while the whole thing squeaks and creaks and groans, it's more solid than a normal modern home which uses mass manufactured joinery. It can flex in the wind and with loads and even earthquakes don't faze it.

Turns out this used to be a regular feature, homes were built with some play in the old days so they'd settle and not crack or break, and were flexible. And everybody used to know if anybody else even moved in a house!

Even if I was struck blind I would be able to tell exactly who was where in my house if the music wasn't on real loud LOL.

Yes, I grew up in a creaky old wood farm house, except that as kids, we learned where every creak lived, and how to get around it. There was one in the middle of the stairs that was determined that no kids was going to get past him - what a bugger he was!

I know what drawers or cabinets are opened.
What is being taken out of them.
Fridge too.
What drink is opened, from milk to tea or water etc.

What is being opened as can boxed or fresh etc.

Lol.

Much more.

I usually end up hollaring from my room..

Close that door.
Shut that drawer.
Turn that off.
Lock that up.

Bla bla bla.

Put that lid on tight.
Dont leave that out of the fridge.
Turn that light out.

Make sure nothing flamable near that hot stove you just turned off.

Blaaaaaaaa.

Somebody has to do it lol.

All from another room with door closed....I do.

I always end up getting up anyway to double check and secure shit anyway.

And the only reason I even comment in this thread?

I have very acute hearing.
I dont have to be in another room to know whats going on.

It just so happens, that most of what I hear
At times

Is others not doing the proper thing...

Or if I smell something

Like I know the clothes in the dryer were crispy dry at 50 minutes...

Its going on an hour..

Get up and turn it off now-

I hear and smell if oil is too hot in a pan.

Turn that shit down..

I mean damn.

Rooms away..

I know.

Even from sleeping.

Im wide awake now lol.

I dont know how to not be the one who keeps the fucking ship going.

And I wouldnt trust anyone else anyway.

Im far from perfect.

But by God I watch over and do..

When most are oblivious. It makes me sad more than mad.

You tell repeatedly and for others own good

And they dont listen.

I would have no problem being a warden

Thats a fact.

That's reasonable honey, I get you

I myself have a part of my home made out of nothing but wood

It's a great material, because wood is never static and in a way still alive

Self regulates with the weather and humidity, offers the best "climate" to live in imo

The house I'm in has some wood stairs, I made it my personal challenge to try to go up and down them as quietly as possible. Sometimes I try to walk through the house as quietly as I can as well. Just to entertain myself, ha.

And there was an old videogame where you played as a ninja. There was one level that had floors that creaked and gave away your position.

This is totally true. Part of our house is sagging cause of cracks in the Foundation.

It's build date was in 1910, I think for something like 5000 dollars.

But the house won't ever fall down because the floorboards are so thick and solid and strong that they will just take the brunt of the weight. Its a tall 3 story house, with a walk-in Attic.

You can totally hear where and when people are above or happening around the house, The sound of squeaking stairways - At night time, etc.

I sometimes avoid going upstairs at night just cause the stairs creak so much!

Half of a concrete, half dirt basement.
