There are probably still a few dial up ones, but I think most that are currently running are accessed through Telnet.

I did, had a lot of fun doing it. Met up with some of the locals IRL. Had to dial long distance for the HPACV boards so my mom would have a heart attack when the phone bill came in, she would just hand me the bill and tell me to pay it. I always did.

One of the local BBSes started carrying some of the Usenet newsgroup and that's how I initially started using the internet.

Interestingly enough, when I got my amateur radio license the first thing that I got into was the local packet BBS. Even that's been gone now for a handful of years. Might start one of my own one day.

Here is one for you. It's a the forum to the best game I've ever played. A WW2 air and ground combat flight simulator called Aces High 3.

I enjoyed Trade Wars on BBS's. The original preferred over TW 2002.

I loved telnetting with your mother

Back then we had slow connections but good ones if you know what I mean?

People would get aroused just seeing words on a screen

Nowwadays words on a screen don't evoke any emotion or stiffen the third leg just by seeing a female nickname

Was Co- on CheckMate BBS in South Florida, years ago. Started my own board in support of a tabletop gaming association some time later.

BBS's still exist, tho most have moved to using telnet or SSH for connection.
