These threads are an excuse for the 'tards to hype and exaggerate the current economy. We're not in even a recession at the moment. We have moderate inflation that the Federal Reserve hasn't been able to control.

They would be given a sack of flour, potatoes, lard, salt and sugar.

Grandma knew what to do with that stuff.

Sometimes she had to pick dandelion weeds and other things to put together a meal.

They lived in a large town but still kept chickens and a garden.
 Quoting: White Boy Rick

Housing was cheap, less building restrictions, you even mention keeping chickens which is illegal in most places today.

They had some things worse but it was better in many other ways back then America really was the land of opportunity.

Today its overpriced housing, endless taxes and woke schools .

As I struggle to make sure I have no credit debt it makes me think I am doing its all wrong. I qualify for no free benefits and think what the f am I doing? I cant get a free loaf of bread we live in a backwards society in America. I could easily rack up 80K on CC live the high life then erase it but choose not too.

Re: During the 1930's depression my great grandfather would stand in food lines with his Mom.
thats the worst americans know. the great depression..

Let me tell you about war

My father was 5 when the germans took his brother to be sent to germany to work there. My father was the only one left to take care of his mother who was permanently bedridden. His dad already died on the front.

So he was left at 5yo to take care of his mother keeping her alive by begging and "cooking" grass and treebark.

For months.

He never got over that.

Brother came back after the war but was so abused in germany he was an empty shell after that.

No foodstamps, no help, nothing. Just suffering.

Sounds like you have a slight partisan bias in your analysis. I'm a secular independent and I would describe food inflation as "significant."

I'm one of those that looks at "price per ounce" and "deals" like an obsessive maniac. The math is objective and what's worse is it doesn't appear they have an answer as they're already talking about 4% inflation being the new normal. Previously "normal" inflation 2% which is a 100% increase therefore we can expect, at best, annual food inflation at twice the rate pre-Covid.

People hanging by a thread, which is many, are not going to make it when that happens. Math.

They use to mark people's fences to let others know if they got a handout at that house or not . My father worked for two dollars a day when he could even find work during that time .
He rode the rails all over going from one state to another to work . The farm simply did not make enough to sustain him at the time .

I was raised by people that lived it and the lessons I learned about waste saving and honest hard and human nature work have been a godsend .

My grandmother used to wipe her ass with the Sears and Roebuck catalog in the out house because they didn't have running water.

Her mother worked making charcoal for one of the furnaces around here, literally lived in a shack/hole in the ground.

Lol bro…my great grandma’s outhouse had a basket of dried corn cobs and a bucket for water.

She was really frugal…cooked big family dinners on a coal stove, made her tea bags last for days. Had them hanging in her kitchen. Her bro died in the Civil War….hard to believe the generational spread I’ve lived through

My dad was born in 1927, mom in 1930.

They grew up being taught to be frugal.

I learned it and raised my children the same way.

It really isn't difficult, provided you aren't lazy.

Two attributes that today's under 40's have never been exposed to, let alone exhibit.

We are 60 days away, max, from an ELE due to sheer inability to do ANYTING remotely self-supporting, like catching drinking water from the rain, growing a potato, or prepping a game carcass, let alone getting off prescription meds or surviving without electricity.

And there is no motivation to repair this intellectual deficit, at all, at any level.
