You are correct. Disembodied spirits can take control of any warm- or cold-blooded creature. The more people turn their backs on God, the more evil spirits get released from hell and roam the earth looking for hosts. Some animals are ideal hosts for them. The only thing holding back the evil is people choosing to do good things.

When we make good (godly) choices, we weaken the power of evil. This is why it's so important for people to be honest, hard-working, trustworthy, and God-fearing, no matter how strong the temptation to be otherwise. People who make godly choices day in and day out are holding back the worst of what's to come. We need to be thankful to them and do our best to be like them.
