Grand Canyon National Park is Country's Most Deadly in Nation, With MOST Missing Persons
The Grand Canyon is known for its breathtaking vistas and being one of the seven natural wonders of the world. A New York Post investigation recently found it is also the deadliest national park in the country, with the most number of missing persons in the nation.

According to the reporting, there have been at least six people found dead and 56 missing persons at Grand Canyon National Park from 2018 through February 2023. Visitors filed about 1,100 missing persons reports in that time as well. Most of those people were found.

A retired chief of emergency services at the Arizona park told the Post that people die from heat stroke, lightning, drowning on the river, suicides, accidental falls, air crashes and more. He estimated that during his time at the park, about 12 people died in the canyon every year. This number is vastly different from the numbers provided to the Post by the Department of the Interior.

It is a beautiful but deadly place

The hike to the basin is not for unhealthy people

The rock faces are huge drops and it is easy enough to climb down to the edge and go whoopsie

I went out on some of the small escarpments with a couple of feet wide and hundreds of foot drops on all sides to get some 360 photos.

All the tourists at the railings way above thought i was nuts.. no wind that day and but i could have made a mistake easy

Was there a few weeks ago. Breathtaking!

I wish I would have taken a photo of a young woman, sitting on the very edge of a cliff with her tripod set up, taking photos of herself. Everyone was looking at her and shaking their heads.

I just read this. We were at the canyon this day:

I remember reading this back in 2017...how tragic!

The final photos of a grandmother and her step-grandson have been posted after they went missing in the Grand Canyon.

Lou-Ann Merrell, 62, (an experienced hiker), and Jackson Standefer, 14, were hiking in the Grand Canyon on Saturday, April 15 when the pair lost their footing while trying to cross a creek during a family trip in a remote part of the northern Arizona park. They were swept away by the water.

Both hikers are related to Randy Merrell, the co-founder of the Merrell Boot Co., a popular outdoor footwear maker.

* Boy's body was found by a commercial river trip on Colorado River
* Lou-Ann Merrell is still missing (I don't think she has ever been found)

I've been to the Grand Canyon three times. As a child there was only a short, chain link fence separating observers from falling off the edge- my dad saved me from falling over when I climbed and leaned far over. In my early twenties I hiked with a group to the bottom and camped out, twice hikers in my group lost footing and went sliding. Two years ago husband and I went, idiots were climbing onto outcroppings and jumping from one to another with no safety measures and certain death if they missed their marks. Honestly I'm surprised the yearly missing and dead tolls aren't much higher than reported!

Was lucky enough in the old days to take backpacking class in 8th grade. After a year of increasingly more difficult trips, those that stayed, were rewarded with a 10 day trip to the GC.

We hiked Hermits trail made be the CCC in the Great Depression. Took us 16 hours to hike to the bottom. Took 23 hours to hike out. Spent 7 nights on the floor. In areas untouched for what seemed like forever. It felt like we were the first everywhere we went.

The moonlight when full, was focused by the mile drop on to the floor, was so bright you had to wear sunglasses if you slept under the stars. My vision was very poor prior to lasek. But because we were in that giant hole of focused moonlight, I could see satellites with my naked eye for the very first time.

On the way down, Billy and I pushed a 50-60lb rock off the side of saddle formation. We watched it roll down and across a plateau and down it to a lower saddle formation. It rolled for over 15 minutes. Then our teacher caught on to what we did. He ordered us to set up for the night at the point and it was only noonish. He made us go get that rock and put it back where we found it. 10 hours later, success.

There’s not billions but trillions of places to disappear there. And never be found.

When we were there last month, we stopped at a few lookouts.
One had a railing, but steps away, it was wide open without a railing. Same cliff. I have to admit, our photos are much nicer without the railing.

Can testify to that, hiked down to Havasupai for week with a group and most of the older adults were in bad shape by half way back up- even the ones on Supai pack nags. Great outing but not for the heat challenged.

Not true! I was there last month. There are PLENTY of places to fall or jump! No railing. Besides, where there are railings, they are barely waist high.

There is a 23-mile drive with 6 viewpoints that you can stop and observe the canyon.

Navajo Point at Grand Canyon (South Rim) had beautiful views.

The wife and I went to the West Rim years ago and walked on the skybridge. It was breathtaking.

No guard rails on the canyon rim in the Hualapai Reservation. I reckon they figured if you were dumb enough to get that close to the edge then.......

On the north west side, it's Indian land. There are no railings to the bottom, you walk to a sheer cliff. The most notable feature are the hundreds of thousands of cigarette butts all over the sides and edges and bottom of the Canyon. It made me sick.

The Grand Canyon is dangerous not because of the giant hole in the ground but because of what lives under the canyon.

It’s an entranceway which is why exploration of it is banned. There’s a Grand Canyon in Antarctica too.
