Sorry, guys, but you can't kill someone just because they're mentally ill. If this guy didn't know how to restrain without killing, then he should leave it up to the police to do.

Depends on the severity of the mental episode and how endangered everyone was feeling. If he felt his own safety and the safety of those around him was in jeopardy then yes, he acted in self defense.
