Does the west have the capability to stop such missiles? The CWIZ, as impressive as it is, cannot. Ukraine claimed to have downed one with the patriots but later retracted that statement. The USS Ford is equipped with lasers that can allegedly take out hypersonic missiles.

Like i said a couple of years back, reason for chip shortage in china, was countries was using them to make weapons for whats coming.

Those lasers were developed for drones, and for that, they are effective. (although targetting 1 at a time might not work that well if the attack consists of a thousand drones (ie China).

Getting a laser kill on a hypersonic missile won't be happening. The missiles are already designed to handle plasma temperatures from the hypersonic air friction.

Also, the shock wave and the plasma make light penetration problematic to say the least.

Lasers will screw up optical guidance sensors, which would be a problem if those missiles relied only on optical guidance. But I don't believe that is the case. From a quick google search, they use Inertial guidance and GPS guidance.

For mass drone attacks, the much more effective defensive system (in my opinion of course), is the Oerlikan Ahead system by Rheinmettal.

I haven't been watching the conflict much for the last few months, but Russia's loss of men is only about 1 for every 10 lost in Ukraine.

Ukraine has lost most of their military age men and now fight with mostly NATO "volunteers".
Russia has had losses, but they are small compared to the losses in Ukraine.

If one were to be shot at the USS Ford then I would say it has a very slim chance to take the missile out, however if they shot 3 or 4 from different angles at the same time then not a chance.

The laser has to heat the target, this involves it being focused exactly on the target, it the target is hyper sonic so creates a plasma field in front of it making it very hard if not impossible to lock onto it, if the laser did lock on to the missile head directly at the ship the plasmas field in front of the missile would scatter the beam reducing its efficiency by a large margin.
