It makes things like this easy to do. 20 years ago, someone actually stole my son's ID info, and actually used it to buy a house.He didn't find out until he applied for an increase on his credit card and they asked him why he wasn't paying his mortgage! We had detectives come, the secret service, all sorts of law enforcement. apparently FL law, at least at that time, allowed houses to be sold through the mail instead of having to appear at a closing. So one guy pretended to be the seller, the other guy pretended to be my son. And the sale went through! Took years to get it completely off his credit, but they got caught at least. The secret service guy called to let me know. But they did say Florida was rife with all sorts of housing scams cuz the laws were not sufficient to the newer technology. Probably updated by now.
