Basically a disputed face, with equally disputed carvings. I'm not sure where I stand on it, if it's a face, it's probably extremely old, lots of wear and tear on it. The carvings seem a little pushed, mention Phoenician king, the problem being fairly obvious, phoenicians didn't call themselves phoenicians, the greeks did.

Still, strike someone's attempt at reinforcing their own theory, and assuming it's at least partly enhanced by man, it's interesting that it faces approximately towards inland, not out towards the sea, or the coast, where it might impress invaders or locals, respectively.

Instead, using an entirely nonscientific procedure, it more or less points to...Ireland? As in one of the supposed locations of atlantis. Of course, google maps are flat, and I'm too lazy to look on a globe, so hell, could point to egypt or anywhere...

Just thought it might be an interesting distraction for other bored folks. :)

Re: Pedra da Gávea
As for the direction it faces. Consider Rushmore in the Black Hills.
What way does that face? To impress the enemies? No to work with the rock formation in that area.
I submit that rock was there and the artist worked with it. That like now, which way it faces doesn't always matter.

Re: Pedra da Gávea
Actually, the face in the article reminds me almost exactly of the head sculptures found on easter island.
