Recession Proof GLP... The Power of Barter & Trade
At one time or another everyone ends up needing help from a tradesman, be it a plumber, mechanic, roofer, handyman, etc.

I'm a skilled tradesman and right now I have more side jobs lined up than I can handle.

Almost all newspapers have a "For Trade" classified section. Better still, Craigslist is loaded with ads for bartering and trading.

Since I have all this work lined up I had to find someone to paint my house. Went to Craigslistg and found someone looking to trade house painting for an older snowmobile. I have a few that I'd been thinking about unloading. Called the guy up, got a few references - and in a few weeks he'll be here to take care of painting the house. That's $$$ I won't be shelling out.

Last month I went to do a side job and eyeballed a nice little dirtbike in my client's shed. So I asked if he'd be interested in trading the bike for my work. I laughed my ass off when he practically ran to the shed to get the bike out and start it up. It was a hell of a trade - the dirtbike is worth way more than the hours I put in working that side job. But the client didn't have to shell out any cash and unloaded the bike that was taking up space in his shed.

These are two examples of bartering/trading. I've been bartering and trading for years. Of course you have to be careful and know what you're getting in exchange for your time and work.

My wife trades babysitting, runs errands, shops and cooks for an elderly neighbor, tutors, and writes resumes - sometimes for cash, but she's also scored an oak bedroom set, jewelry, perennial flowers for the garden, all kinds of stuff.

Everyone has some kind of trade or skill to use for bartering and trading.

Anyone else out there doing this? Got any success stories, ideas or suggestions to toss out there?

As the economy gets worse, more people are gonna be looking to work out ways to trade and barter.
Check out Craigslist and your paper. The lists for bartering and trading are huge. So if you need a service or have one to offer, take a look around for some good deals.

I'm an electrician and I trade with other tradesmen all the time. Last summer, I traded my labor installing a subpanel and wiring a garage/workshop for drywall and paint in my own new workshop.

I do this as well.

My field has anything to do with computers, both hardware & software wise. Web design/dev. This would most likely not be extremely useful in a huge emergency such as a nuclear fallout or whatever, but it *may* come in handy - mostly the computer hardware part.

Good advice.. we're going back to basics of economy; trade.

Anyone interested in this should Google "how to barter and trade".
There are hundreds of sites to flip through. Go take a look.

I'm getting busy looking for a roofer. The house needs a new roof and I'm hoping to find some kind of good trade for at least part of the work.

Barter is a great way of skipping the middleman, and as OP says not having to shell out cash. It will also become even more important as the dollar becomes worth less and less. I was a teacher, so I can tutor children now, and if TS really HTF, I can set up a little "school" for the local kids in exchange for garden produce, meat from hunters, just about anything.

If you are into preparing for a disaster, stock up on supplies for your trade or skill. This way you can use it to get the items you need that you can't prepare for yourself by trading your skill for them.

Excellent ideas.
Personal responsibility - try it sometime. Quit blaming others for your bad choices. Consequences happen.

I have been batering with my dentist for the last year. I am a remodeler/handyman, she has an older home in an upscale neighborhood. Over $6000 in dental work so far. I am currently bartering for a motor home.

Passing this site information on.
For those who know the value of barter & trade

Barter Bart

[link to www.barterbart.com]

The idea here is: No money, just barter and trade in an auction style format

Something to consider:

If you are worried about trusting the person you barter with, you should consider utilizing the local barter option. This way you don't have to worry about shipping your items, as you can simply meet somewhere in your local community to make the trade. Remember, BarterBart.com only serves as a free service to set up an initial contact between two people who want to barter. No contracts are made or implied by winning an auction. Good luck and we hope you find what you are looking for

The site hasn't 'taken off' just yet. As times continue to grow more difficult, and people look to barter & trade as a viable alternative, sites like Barter Bart may become a lifeline for those with services to offer/those in need of goods & services.

If nothing else, bookmark the site for future reference.

Barter sounds good, but not with a GLPer. When TSHF, I will be with like minded people. A GLPer would be the last person I would depend on.

Hmmm, I disagree, though setting up a trade with an Anonymous Coward would be taking a risk.

In any case, imo it's best to keep it local. Agree on a public meeting place, thoroughly inspect items, make the trade.
