SELCO: The Harsh Reality of Barter and Trade in an SHTF Economy
QUOTE
Barter is a hot topic in prepper circles, so I thought we should ask someone who has a lot of real-world experience with trade in a dangerous situation.

If you don’t know Selco, he survived a year in Bosnia when his city was blockaded. You can learn more about it in his book, found here. Supplies were not allowed in or out, and residents were left without utilities and services.

This interview is in his own words and originally appeared in 2018. With times as they are in 2023, it’s an important topic to revisit.

How quickly did people turn to barter once your city was locked down?
It was a matter of a few weeks.

Actually, for ordinary folks, it was a matter of few weeks because we did not get the new reality right at the beginning of everything.

I did a thread on cannabis smokers being one step ahead of the curve when the SHTF, since those connected (in places where it is still illegal) to underground industries already have a segue into the Black Market. Most people do not. Not sure what happened to that thread but it still holds true.
Do you have a segue into the underground economy?

Good info,
Best to learn from those that have "been there and done that".

Great article, read it last year or so, real facts.
Good stuff man!

This was here last year and a great read. Good time to remind people.

Cans of spam and tuna, doesn't matter if you eat that or not. Will go further than silver coins.
I know a thing or two, because I've seen a thing or two.

Selco was on this forum years ago, i talked to him quite a bit, really impressed with the lessons learned in the shit he went through

Things are not looking good for the usa, the few of us who remain will need to work together to survive, so many illegals pouring in are going to make survival extra challenging

If you are trading drugs/alcohol you are probably going to end up dead, those are not the kind of people you want to deal with , but to each his own.

Despite the fact that ration books were explicitly intended for the sole use by the named recipient, a barter system developed whereby people traded one type of stamp for another, and black markets began cropping up all over the country in which forged ration stamps or stolen items were illegally resold. By the end of the war, restrictions on processed foods and other goods like gasoline and fuel oil were lifted, but the rationing of sugar remained in effect until 1947.

Want to try out a ration recipe on your own?
