Archaeologist claims discovery of Cleopatra's tomb

London, May 25 : A flamboyant archeologist claims to have identified the final resting place of Cleopatra, the Hellenistic ruler of Egypt, who originally shared power with her father Ptolemy XII and eventually gained sole rule of Egypt.

Zahi Hawass, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities along with a team of 12 archaeologists and 70 excavators, has started searching for the entrance to her tomb.

And after a breakthrough two weeks ago, he suspects Cleopatra is buried with her Roman lover Mark Antony at a temple 30km from Alexandra called Tabusiris Magna.

Hawass has found a 400ft tunnel beneath the temple containing clues that the supposedly beautiful queen may lie beneath.

"We've found tunnels with statues of Cleopatra and many coins bearing her face, things you wouldn't expect in a typical temple," Times Online quoted him, as saying.

A fortnight ago the team unearthed a bust of Mark Antony, the Roman general who became Cleopatra's lover and had three children with her before their ambitions for an Egyptian empire brought them into conflict with Rome.

They committed suicide after being defeated by Octavian in the battle of Actium in 31BC.

"Our theory is that both Cleopatra and Mark Antony are buried here," said Hawass.

The 60-year-old archeologist believes that the temple's location would have made it a perfect place for Cleopatra to hide from Octavian's army.

Work on the site has been suspended until the summer heat abates and is due to resume in November, when Hawass will use radar to search for hidden chambers.

If Hawass' thinking is true, he could make the greatest archaeological discovery in Egypt since British archaeologist Howard Carter uncovered Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922.

Correct, that was Messalina. Supposedly she competed side by side with a prostitute to see who could take on the most men in a single night. Not too long afterward, she was executed via a swift blow from an executioner's sword that left her pretty head rolling on the palace floor all by its lonesome. What a price to pay for megacock!

Brilliant. 2000 years of amazement and interest in the Egyptians, and this guy makes the groundbreaking leap of logic that Cleopatra might be buried...near her hubby.

Granted, I'm no fan of the worlds finest self-proclaimed archaeologist, but what kind of competition did he beat out to get his position, or is the quality of Egypt's indigenous archaeological community such that he's the top dog in his field? Of course, that might explain why this stuff could be sitting in their back yard for thousands of years, and they didn't think to look at it till foreigners showed an interest in it. Serious lack of imagination there...

I love the way Zahi makes these pronouncements and then it turns out he "may" have found "indications" that it "might" be her tomb, but be sure and STAY TUNED til next season when "perhaps" we will discover some earth shattering revelation but then again maybe not but I won't tell you now you'll just have to wait til I'm good and ready and who knows when that may be so be sure to stay perched on the edge of your seat and holding your breath in anticipation of the next tiny piece of information that I will dribble out as I see fit til you get so bored with the whole waiting game that you'll go away and forget all about it and I'll have Egypt all to myself. Go Zahi.

Hmm, I'll make some calls, see if we can't arrange it so Zahi's meeting with Obama once Fox News figures out which scapegoat the Neocons want them to pin the assassination on. A nice 2 for one. Hell, some folks might even forgive Karl Rove for pulling the trigger if Zahi goes down too... :)

Tourism to Eqgpt is down because the dollar is worthless so americans are staying home. Bad economy and loss of jobs is hurting tourism everywhere. This guy probably already found the tomb and has kept it secret from the peasants for years but they are desperate and need to drum up business so what better time to announce this? Once the heat lets up they probably hope americans will flood over there to be a part of this great discovery. A discovery that is being staged.

Plus...aside from the dollar plunge, it is dangerous to go to Egypt. If you are unlucky, the beach, the tour bus or your chosen place will get bombed and you go home with either your lifeless body or perhaps you get lucky, with amputated limbs. I would choose the first.

Luck is what I would pray to have with me when I visit Egypt.

Not going to happen. It wasn't his idea, the people that suggested it are still active and respected, so they'll steal the limelight if anything's found. Also, although Zahi adamantly opposes the idea, there's a chance they might find something around that ancient marker that might blow open his whole charade.

My feeling on Zahi isn't just that he's an ego maniac that wants the world to think he's the only source of great Egyptian discoveries, or that he wants to make sure the process is run by an Egyptian. I could see that when his "takeover" first happened, but it's been too long. I'm sure power plays a part, but my gut feeling is worse.

I think he found something. Or more properly, someone found something, something that would tear apart the whole deal they've built up there. I mean, the government has to see that the guy they've put in charge isn't what he should be. I'm sure they're proud to have one of their own running the show, but they've got to see that the way he's going about it is clumsy.

Why haven't they replaced him? Certainly there's someone else there than can do the job, someone the international community would accept, that could diplomatically achieve the same results, without making so many people upset. It's almost as if the government knows Zahi is a screwup, but that's okay, because that's what they want now...maybe to keep eyes off Egypt, dissuade people from wanting to know more, and push archaeologists into other interests.

In other words, the whole bumbling idiot thing is on purpose, to turn people off. Why? It's a lucrative industry they've got, what could possibly ruin it?

Perhaps finding a clue to the "Mother" civilization, the one that ties Egypt to the Americas, to Asia. If that's not in Egypt or even somewhere close to Egypt, Egypt suddenly becomes a second class tourist attraction. Yes, people will of course go see the pyramids, sphinx, and so on. However, the mother civilization will now garner the big archaeological bucks, will draw the tourists, and the world's attention. For the Egyptian government, that would pretty much risk the slide of Egypt back into obscurity.

Of course, I could be wrong, but Zahi's actions seem desperate. The danger, from my spot up here in the cheap seats, is that they'd make the decision to destroy whatever they found, to hide it from the world forever, if possible. Unlikely that's possible, it would only be senseless destruction of history, and I'd hope Egyptians still place some value on that, so I think they'd hide whatever they found.

Who knows, it just doesn't make sense, these trickling bits of almost redundant information over the past while, with a guy like Zahi seeming to do everything he can to stop and even reverse the work of the past.

True, Europeans spend lots of money on their vacations... it used to be in August, everyone went on vacations, especially the French. It was like an unwritten law... August, bam! France just emptied out, and everyone was just... GONE... to the Riviera, or to Zaragoza, etc. etc... all over the place. Don't know if it is like that anymore. Probably is.
