Does anyone here play Disc Golf?
What is disc golf?
It is similiar to regular ball golf but played with a frisbee-type disc made of plastic. The average disc golf course is between 5 and 8 thousand feet (about a mile and a half). The rules are similiar but instead of hitting a ball with a club, you throw your disc from the tee, then throw from your "lie", then putt out into a basket.

Whats so great about it?
First of all, it is very inexpensive to play. Most discs cost less than $10 dollars, and you can begin with one or 2 discs. Also, most disc golf courses are free! A foursome can play a full round of 18 in less than 2 hours.

Why play?
The best reason (for me) is that it gets you OUTSIDE in the open air, and gives you a great excuse to walk around a park for a couple of hours. It is also a great form of exercise. It is also a fun form of competition which requires skill of the body and mind.

All that aside.... i gotta tell you people, this is the shit!

I am 40 years old, and for most of my life I was very athletic, but have grown lazy and unmotivated as I've grown older. I can no longer compete well at the sports i used to excell at. This has caused me to give up on many of them, and my body has deteriorated as a consequence. Then i found disc golf. As a competetive person by nature, the sport has fulfilled the need to be active AND competetive, while getting me off the couch, away from my computer, and back into nature all for the same reason.
I have gotten back in shape in the last year, I have something to look forward to every nite after work, and am even thinking about entering tournaments.
I highly recommend disc golf to anyone who is looking for a great hobby. There are disc courses all over, and many more opening all the time. It is a sport you can play for life, and it never gets old or boring.

Love it. Kicked some major butt the last time I played it. ( a few years ago) The closest Frisbee golf course to me is under water right now.

It's a bit hot lately, but yeah, love me some disc golf. Age 34 here. Taught my friends to play.

My disc golf bag has a holder for beer.

great to hear!
this sport has grown exponentially in the last 2 decades but needs to keep growing.
The more people that play, the more courses will be built.

Re: Does anyone here play Disc Golf?
I HAVE played it a time or three, but I wouldn't say that I actively play...it was pretty cool all in all I kinda had forgotten about it to be honest, maybe I'll have to get a game in with some friends during the summer.

“…if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. Re: Does anyone here play Disc Golf?
Took it up last summer at age 56. It is really fun and great for my health. I play about 5 times a week. My weight has gone from 220 to 195 and my blood pressure has dropped significantly. It is free at every course in my area so after I got my disc set (7 discs and a bag for about $100.00) I haven't spent one nickel. My wife has also taken it up and she loves it as well. It is the perfect game for me.

Re: Does anyone here play Disc Golf?
nice to hear ACs
and to KindaGamey.... i think that is a water holder.... but beer is mostly water anyway, as long as you dont leave your empties on the course :)

one other thing to think about.
this is becomming a serious sport! pros make good money, and there arent a whole lot of them yet. this is kind of a "ground floor" sport. i plan on teaching my daughter to play when she is about 10 or so. if she grows up playing, her muscles will develop in ways that will benefit her in the sport and she could make a living playing.

even for those of us who are older, if you are willing to put the time in, you could make good money playing this game.
even if you dont, there are tournaments all over, and you can have alot of fun just with the competition.

Re: Does anyone here play Disc Golf?
It's a great way to be in nature while having fun at the same time.

The worst disc golf locations are those that jampack everything in one tiny flat location where every hole can see all other holes. Its better than nothing at all, but its quite bland.

The best have a complete variety of wide open spaces, rolling terrain, and light to densely wooded approaches. An adventure in itself.

Congrats on the ace TLD3. Can't wait for my first. Have hit the basket but not in from the tee at 167 and 183 ft. Know I'm gonna get one someday.

I've only played a real course a few times, but I play informally here at home quite a bit. I have 7.5 acres, and whoever won the previous "hole" picks the next one, we just throw at trees, not baskets. 3rd oak from the fence over there, that kind of thing.

It sounds funny that a game like this could give me a new lease on life, but I couldn't agree more. Wish I would have discovered it sooner, but better late than never. One of the great things to me is that every course I have played is so different from the others. Makes it extremely fun and challenging. Seriously, I could play every day.

So true. I have friends and brothers who play spherical golf and refuse to try disc. They think its a wimpy game. I tell them just wait till you try to thread a 200 ft shot down a ten foot wide path in the woods. Not so wimpy.

tunnel shots are so much fun, you dont have to be young and athletic to nail them, you just have to have your mental game going at full speed.
i wish i could hit them more than half the time.

Played one course that was almost entirely in the woods up and down this ridge. One hole the pin would be seventy feet below you and the next one would be seventy feet above you. Very difficult and very tiring, but I loved every minute of it.

Re: Does anyone here play Disc Golf?
i used to eat off a frisbee! i learned to nail delay so i could do all kinds of tricks, mastered every throw, played for hours and hours everyday for years, the game at the time was "guts" , basically two lines of people facing each other about 50 feet apart, with several discs, and you would rifle it at them, and they could only catch it with one hand, lmao, it was actually really popular, i believe michigan tech was national champion

never played much golf, lost interest, although i did teach my daughter the finer points , she is pretty damn good

Re: Does anyone here play Disc Golf?
I built a course.
4 aces on three holes in 3 years of play. Didn't get to play much this year :(

Chain is stupid expensive, I scrapped my targets together for about $50 a pop. I use 2, sometimes three as play twice targets on the 18. I also have 2 contact targets built out of scrap metal/garbage that'll make noise if you hit them.

Incredible through the woods and open territory as well, I think a lot of my holes are relatively short, most could feasibly get aced. The rough is psycho, and I always tell folks that the second shot is the mucho important one on this course. All par 3, #10 is really hard to par. Best score: 6 under. Average: 1 under. Lousy day at the links: over par.

And I got to build it on neighbor's unused land. I end the season in early june and fire it back up in early october to avoid battling the vegetation. Can play in summer, but it takes as long to search for missing discs as to play the course.

Fun to see a thread for disc golf.

When I was a kid in Tulsa, it was known as the Frisbee Golf Capital of the World. In the summer time, we'd play it all through the neighborhood, picking our targets as we go. . .trees, sign posts, old people. . .
