U.S. official appeals for biotechnology to cope with food crisis
is there way you're supposed to say, "and so it begins"?

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said Friday that biotechnology tools should be used to help cope with the food crisis.

"In the long term, we believe sustainable food security will come from advances in science and technology and the creation of an efficient global market for both agriculture products and food production technologies," Negroponte said during a speech at the World Food Price Laureate Announcement Ceremony.

"We therefore are strongly encouraging countries to remove barriers to the use of innovative plant and animal production technologies, including biotechnology," he said.

"Biotechnology tools can help speed the development of crops with higher yields, higher nutrition value, better resistance to pests and diseases, and stronger food system resilience in the face of climate change," he added.

The international community has been grappling with soaring prices of corn, wheat, rice, soybeans and other agriculture products and price hikes have set off riots and protests from Africa to Asia.

"Negroponte diplomatic responsibilities were appalling. Democracy and human rights are not on Negroponte preferred menu. Negroponte will be serving the interests of U.S. tyranny and U.S. Corporations in Iraq. Negroponte will bring to Iraq the economic disasters inflicted on the people of Latin America by the U.S. and U.S-backed corporations. Negroponte is not suitable to serve in the current political environment of Iraq."

Negroponte has a history of catering to the will of the large corporations.

Sustainable food security will come when EVERYONE on the planet learns how to grow their own food.

No-other way around it.

Biotechnology is what ruins the NATURAL process of it all.

Do I need to say Monsanto???

Re: U.S. official appeals for biotechnology to cope with food crisis
British resistance to genetically modified crops may have to be rethought in the light of food shortages and rising prices around the world, a Government minister has suggested.

Environment minister Phil Woolas said that "as a nation", the UK needs to ask itself whether GM can play a part in addressing the current crisis, which has seen food riots in several developing countries.

According to reports, Mr Woolas held talks on Wednesday with the Agricultural Biotechnology Council, an umbrella group formed in 2000 to promote the role of biotechnology in agriculture.

And he told The Independent: "There is a growing question of whether GM crops can help the developing world out of the current food price crisis.

"It is a question that we as a nation need to ask ourselves. The debate is already under way.

"Many people concerned about poverty in the developing world and the environment are wrestling with this issue."

The Government has already decided that there is no scientific case for a blanket ban on GM crops, but following heated public debate about so-called "Frankenstein foods" it made clear in 2004 that commercial planting would go ahead only on a case-by-case basis if it can be shown to be safe for humans and the environment.

There is no commercial cultivation of GM plants in the UK at present, and only one trial is under way, involving potatoes in Cambridgeshire.

The rise in allergies i due in contrast to the rise in use of GM plants.

People are dying because doctors cannot figure it out.

Another instance of the government killing it's own citizens.

As an aside, GM chicken does not have the same texture as real chicken.
