So, ... I don't even know what to say about this. I was checking out prices on jelly, and you know how walmart does these silly markdowns, even though we all know it's price psychology and they might actually be charging more.

But I keep track of the price of peanut butter and jelly because when THOSE cheap staples go up, we're all fucked...

For instance, before the plandemic, a jar of Jif could be had for 99 cents. A buck 99 at most. Now it's $3.12.

Well, look at the imgur. The prices they crossed out for standard inexpensive jelly products are insane!

(look at the crossed out prices, not the actual ones)

for instance:
$8.99 for a 20oz grape marked down to $2.98

When on God's green earth would a 20 oz bottle of grape jelly cost nearly $9?????

It wouldn't...

Harbor freight got in trouble for doing that a few years ago. They were caught making fictitious claims of massive savings that weren't remotely true. Seems to be something with Chinese owned corporations.

I went to Wally World today for a bag of Organic Raw Cane Sugar. The six pound bag and for some reason I can't find it anywhere else. I also bought a bic lighter.

MY POINT IS that I noticed how full the shelves were as opposed to my local Ingles and Food Lion which both look distressingly bare.

The two “Natural” on the left with large markdowns are in plastic containers. The “Natural” on the right without the markdown is in glass.

Aside from that, when searching make sure you filter out 3rd parties resellers. They’re always out to try and catch the unsuspecting shopper.

It's interesting that you mention that! Three days ago while shopping at a local Kroger I was hoping to use their digital coupons to save a little coin but when I checked the expiration date on three items on my list I discovered that all of them expired within three weeks... including a 30 oz jar of Kraft Mayo that would normally last me two months sitting in my fridge once it was opened. Needless to say, I didn't buy any!

I think they're simply discounting very old stock [since Mayo usually has an expiration of at least 9-months after purchase] and hustling it off their shelves using those digital coupons.

CHECK THOSE DATES, PEOPLE! While it's true that most expiration dates amount to nothing more than a crude freshness guideline, even discounted items should have a decent one or store signage stating they have a short shelf life.

BTW: I only shop Walmart online and then only because they usually deliver to my door the same day. When you're an old man like I am [I'm 73] it reduces the risk of catching something deadly just by walking through those doors and... spares my back from lugging a 40-lb box of kitty litter home.

I feel ya. To the above posters, I too feel like I am betraying my country when shopping there, but I live in a very small boonies town, and sometimes you need to go there for the basics like trash bags or toilet paper.

I buy my eggs from neighbors, and most of what I eat from my farmer's market, so the people who said that up there probably buy more shit from China than I do, but yeah, even crossing the threshold of a Walmart is betrayal. I remember when that was the place to go to buy American. damn

So I looked around on the site. It COULD be false advertising of discounts, BUT, I suspect something more sinister, maybe because I shop here for information. I see they have a 20 count of Hefty bags marked down from 8.78 to 2.93, and a SINGLE unflavored Chapstick marked down from 9.73 to 1.43. So either they're in trouble for false advertising claims, or you're about to see some insane inflationary price hikes this year. Which is it?

Right, right, but since when would a single tube of Chapstick EVER cost 9 bucks?

You have a point about the old merch. A lot of stuff is old, stale or bad too. Is no one producing some of the items in the store anymore? If so, then yeah, they would be about to mark up what's left.

If the dollar crashed, then stuff would cost more if it came from overseas, also. Or maybe if shipping from China was expecting to end soon, like, say, because of a war, that would also skyrocket prices.

They are having you get used to the Bidenomics price...

Using your own example of the peanut butter, if a second Biden term has similar inflation to the 1st, then expect that Jar of peanut butter to cost you $16.39 instead at the end of a Biden second term.

I've noticed the same insane pricing on Walmart's webpage. Just yesterday I was pricing 28oz cans of crushed Tomatoes and they actually had a single can listed at $32.00 that was sold by a third-party vendor. And the only way to get Walmart's Good Value house brand was to buy them eight at a time. Who in their right mind would even consider that kind of expenditure when you can get a single can at Dollar General for $1.75 [that at Kroger costs $1.89]?

Further, I've noticed that Walmart often will not offer free delivery on cheaper merchandise, even with a $35 minimum order. If you want it you have to go to the store in person; I was shocked they actually delivered six cans of their cheap Tuna in my order yesterday.

BTW: I've heard that Dollar Tree are poised to jack their prices up by another quarter so everything in their stores will cost at least $1.50...

As a prepper of over 20 years, I usually buy in multiples of at least four so I have at least that many on my shelves at all times even as I rotate stock using up the oldest first.

But speaking of Beans, last month I bought a 1lb bag of Great Northerns at my local $TREE; normally beans have at least a two-year shelf life but when I pre-soaked and pressure-cooked them they were still rock-hard after the usual 20 minutes. So, I cooked them an additional twenty and they were still hard and had a bitter taste as well. I've NEVER had that happen before!

It reminded me of something my Grandfather said about getting government Beans during the great depression. He said no matter how long my Grandmother cooked them they still came out like pebbles, so instead of eating them he planted them in his garden and his harvest were the way they should've been all along.

Re: Something fucky at ye old Wally World
Loblows up here keeps advertising "PRICE DROP until [date]". The thing is, the price is the same as it always was. There is no reduction. Really they are just increasing the price on a set date and trying to pretend it's a sale.
