Navy will now grant waivers to recruits who arrive to basic training testing positive for Marijuana
POLITICSU.S. Navy Expands Marijuana Waiver Authority To Address Recruiting ShortfallsPublished 12 hours ago on February 9, 2024By Ben Adlin

Amid the U.S. military’s ongoing recruiting crisis, the Navy is expanding authority to grant waivers to recruits who arrive at boot camp and initially test positive for marijuana, instead of simply sending them home.

“If they fail that test and own up—’Yes, I smoke marijuana ‘—we do an evaluation of the young person to make sure there’s not something else going on,” Rear Adm. James Waters told reporters this week. “But we trust that through the process of boot camp that we have an opportunity to bring them along with our culture.”

Also eliminating the requirement of a high school diploma and lowering minimum ASVAB scores. This is not a good trend.

Back in the day Recruiters would go to juvee court and the judge would say - you can do time or join, and most would go on and enlist. Many many hard luck cases got their shit together after finding "family" and stability in the Armed services. Half my supervisors came out of these times, the other half enlisted Navy to stay out of the jungle of Viet Nam. Yes I am old.

By the time I came along, and everyone was all in Love again with service types, it was very hard to get in - well comparatively.

But as for the past, I heard the stories. I heard about how they would smoke dope in the barracks and outrageously even on the flight deck during ops. They would smoke cigarettes at their desks too. I enlisted when they were all zero tolerance, and no smoking which the old timers were still bitching about. Couldn't even go to your car and have a smoke break. I heard the sea stories about the wilder past.

Now you have a situation where they probably can enlist you, get you through MEPS and have you in bootcamp in a week.
That is a fast turnaround in a pot legal state. They don't want to lose those bodies, so I am sure they hustle them. Here is the thing, 24 states have legal recreational weed these days. Of course, you are going to have recruits showing up at boot camp popping positive.

Stop clutching yer pearls. Sometimes the service hooks some excellent lifers when they open wide and give a few a chance for stability.

Wonder if they will open wide enough that you can skip juvenile detention if you enlist? That was normal back in the day. Recruiters on the back bench in the Court House.

Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

Nothing new.

I was let in without graduating high school.

I also failed my 1st, 2nd and 3rd drug test...with waivers.

It was the forth time ...that got me.

I was 17 and it was the early 90's...did have to get my mom to sign off.

So yeah nothing new.

Not only did I not graduate.

I had several gang tattoos..that was registered in my city.

Yet they still let me in.

I was the flag bearer in my company...= the face or ambassador for the company.

Nothing new...hell they used to give ya the option...go to jail or join the military.

This is not new, they always have. I knew plenty of sailors on pot waivers 30 years ago.

Navy is just telling you desperate for recruits. Again, this is not new, they always have, I knew sailors offered jail or navy. They usually were the biggest problems too in my experience.
