Maybe most didn't, but everybody with a brain expected a kind of islamic resistance movement to appear. But Saddam was unable to stop the US. He lost everything.

Same with Iran. Though Iran can inflict some pain, it cannot defeat a US attack on it. And it would lose its nuclear program and a large part of its military assets.
