Yay! Summoned for Jury Duty!
One of the bonuses of living in a small town, I suppose.

I get picked nearly every year.

Last time, I got to sit in the courthouse for 6 hours, then they decided they didn't need me.

Never mind me, just whining about doing my civic duty. :)

I've gone a few times. Sit for hours and eventually one lawyer or the other excuses me cuz he doesn't like my looks or tone or something.

Pisses me off, I want to JUDGE somebody!

It would be cool if I got to hear an interesting case.

Mostly though, it's just a lot of sitting around and waiting, which drives me insane.

So what story are you going with?

Crazy southern racist?

Oh, some advice from wikihow...

Always follow the law when dealing with the judicial system, but cop a serious attitude at the same time. You need to present yourself as unstable and stubborn to avoid any and all jury duty.

My husband and daughter was served for the same day same time and same place! The 19th of this month then found out a friend was also served on the same date and time and location. Very Strange

The last time I was served I was picked for a murder trial, he was found quilty second degree, 16 years in prison.

Don't forget your American obligation to judge the Law as well as the law-breaker. If the law is unconstitution or rediculous, you have a duty to vote not guilty.

Re: Yay! Summoned for Jury Duty!
I once got out of a huge murder trial in Chicago by finally stating that since I work with gangmembers and had once been attacked by a gang member, that as far as I was concerned, anyone who actually managed to kill a gangmember should be found not guilty on the basis of self-defense.

The prosecution immediately dismissed me which was a great relief for me because it would have been a long and dangerous trial for the jurors. I wanted nothing to do with it. It is one thing to do a one day trial but quite another in murder or corruption trials which can go on forever.

Just say you could not possibly be fair or impartial for whatever crazy or not so crazy reason you can think of.

Re: Yay! Summoned for Jury Duty!
i live in a small town too...but i've never been summoned for jury duty. i would be excused if i was though. i'm a physician assistant and i get subpoenaed a lot in cases involving my patients. so far i've only had to give testimony once in front of the grand jury involving a rape case though. they didn't indict(sp?) though so i never had to testify at trial. the times i hate most when i get subpoenaed are in child abuse/molestation cases. i get completely flustered waiting to see if they call me to testify or not. one perk of living in a small town and being subpoenaed though is that they let me go ahead and work that day instead of having to sit at the courthouse all day and they just call me when it's my turn to testify (if they call).

yeah, you could more than likely get out of jury duty if you used the "moderator at glp" card. hell, if they weren't going to dismiss me because every person in the whole damned county is a patient of mine i'd use the " i'm a member of glp and the administrator at another forum" card....lol. ANYTHING i could think of to get out of it.

It could be a murder case actually. Murder are pretty rare here, but I read about one downtown last weekend. Some guys where fighting outside a bar, one gets in his truck to leave, other guy tries to grab him through the window as he's driving off, guy driving pushes him off and he falls underneath the wheels. Dude in truck just kept driving.

Yep agree, the questions they put you through all the while the defendants family and friends are sitting in court and they ask personal questions. Made me a bit nervous especially after the verdict was read, we had to be lead out by security doors and accompanied to our vehicles before court was ajourned. Scary Feeling!
