MOSCOW - A top Russian general said Wednesday that 64 of the country's soldiers were killed in this month's fighting with Georgia and 323 were wounded.

The figure given by Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovistsyn, deputy head of the general staff, reduces the fatality toll from the initial figure of 74 but substantially raises the number of wounded. Russia previously had said about 170 were wounded.

Earlier this month, Georgia cracked down on the breakaway territory of South Ossetia, which is aligned with Moscow and wants independence. Russia responded by sending its troops and tanks across the Georgian border.

Georgian officials have said they lost 160 soldiers and that 300 are missing. Russia claims Georgian losses are much higher.

Civilian casualties remain unclear. South Ossetian officials on Wednesday said 1,492 civilians in the breakaway province had been killed. The figure could not be verified independently.

Weren't there reports that people were having to bury their own dead? Most without coffins?

Perhaps if they had waited longer so they could line up the rotting bodies of their dead relatives and friends for an official count there would not be all this confusion?

How many of these claimed deaths of civilians were actually S. Ossetian separatist militants actually involved in the fighting?

We haven't seen ANY claims of these casualties, I'm sure they are counted as civilians to inflate the figures in an opportunistic propagandist way.

Yes many reports they had to bury them behind in the backyard of their houses cause the smell was getting awful.

The Georgians obviously don't have many civilians to mourn about otherwise they would use it in the propaganda war.

So, assuming the Russians are excellent counting dead bodies in wars and conflicts (which I cannot deny they have the potential due their experiences of killing millions of people in pogroms, gulags and ethnic cleansing) - did they count the number of Chechyans, Latvians, Poles etc. etc. in past and current conflicts too?

Russia kicked Georgian ass, and in this case was totally justified after Georgia mass murdered civilians. Fuck Georgia, and all of it's asshole allies, who punked out when faced with the Russian Bear.
