She's so in bed with Big Oil she is suing the Bush Administration over it's tepid efforts to protect Polar Bears, because it could burden Big Oil...

McCain had some very qualified alternatives to pick from, many of whom would bring a lot to the table and shore up McCain's weaknesses.

I'm watching all this as close as anybody here and whether she is/is not guilty of a cover up but she hasn't even accepted the vp position and they are digging the dirt on her. Rosy-cheeked "hockey mom" Sarah Palin received a warm introduction from running mate John McCain, but a far chillier portrait of Alaska's governor was painted by her political rivals back home.

Lawmakers from the nation's coldest state shivered at the thought of her being a heartbeat away from the Oval Office.

"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" state Senate President Lyda Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown Wasilla, told the Anchorage Daily News. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

Other Republicans were genuinely surprised by McCain's selection and meteoric rise.


"Gov. Palin has an amazing ability to connect with voters, and I think there's some jealousy there," said Andrew Halcro, a Republican former state senator who ran against her in the last governor race as an independent.

"But there is this feeling out there that she gets a lot of credit that she shouldn't get credit for."

The moose-hunting ex-beauty queen unseated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in 2006 on a platform that touted a proposal for a new natural gas pipeline while ending sweetheart deals with oil companies.

Just a week into office, she followed up on her words of reform and auctioned off the state jet, which had become a symbol of government excess.

But this summer, Palin's ethics were challenged after she ousted Walt Monegan, the state public safety commissioner. He says he was fired for refusing to fire the governor's former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The dismissal brought criticism, and the state Legislature launched an ethics probe. The findings are due at the end of October, on the eve of the presidential election.

"I think it could hurt her in one of her stronger areas," said state Sen. Hollis French, who is director of the probe. "She's being touted as an ethical reformer. This could give her an ethical black eye."

Monegan was fired on July 11 after Palin aides and her husband, Todd, allegedly pressured him to fire Mike Wooten, the ex-husband of Palin's younger sister, Molly McCann. In visits and calls, they claimed Wooten had threatened the family, Tasered his 11-year-old stepson and had been drinking on the job, he said.

Wooten and McCann divorced in 2005 but have been embroiled in a bitter custody battle. In 2006, he was suspended for five days based on his former in-laws' allegations.

After her role in Monegan's firing was called into question, Palin admitted that she did speak to the commissioner about Wooten when she first took office. And a recorded phone call showed that at least one aide made a call to a state trooper liaison asking why Wooten still had a job.

The Washington Post reported Palin acknowledged this summer that a half-dozen of her staffers made more than two dozen calls about the matter to state officials.

Palin's spokesman, Bill McAllister, said he was unaware the aide had made that phone call. He also said Monegan was let go because he had not performed up to speed as the commissioner, leaving dozens of trooper posts unfilled.

McAllister also pointed to Palin's continued popularity.

"The small group of people in Alaska that don't like her really hate her with a passion," McAllister said. "Finally, they thought they found something that could bring her down. The public isn't buying it. She still has an 80 percent approval rating."
