Palin had a child at 17, raised it and now she's a VP nominee.

curious. I keep reading how Palin was pregnant at 16-17... but, yet her oldest child is 18-19, right? and she's 44, right? 44-19 is like 25. So, where is the 25 year old? Or was she 25 when she had her oldest?
 Quoting: Geogal 373387

Yeah I kept reading that too. I'm like who is this oldest child? I thought her oldest is 19. She was in her mid 20's when she had him.

Re: The VP Candidates Family
Just because you gave up your career does not mean that Sarah Palin has to give up hers

-Good point, but it doesn't mean we have to vote for her either. The person who gave up her career isn't the only one of us women who CAN'T HAVE IT ALL.
Stay at home mom, or not, any mom could have her teenage daughter turn-up-pregnant, we get that, and I for one apprieciate Palin's choices when it comes to going-through with her pregnancy, and publicly supporting her daughter when the alternative is that the two most currently famous babies could have been (Babygate!), aborted and everyone could have been spared the embarassment.
BUT----would I want MY teenage daughter thinking that she could HAVE IT ALL?
No. Because you CAN'T, no one can and that's just how it is.
Its unfair to have people PRETENDING like we can.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75362

Well some people can have it all. As I taught my child aim for the moon and you will catch a star. I brought up a beautiful child, ran two companies, did a tremendous amount of charity work and never looked back. People can have a good career and children. Quality time with children is better then no quality time.

And I was a single mum.

I had it all and there is no reason why other mums can't have it all if they wish.

The fact that a president has a mistress (or a male lover for that matter) is NONE OF MY BUSINESS!
 Quoting: Mark In NYC

But, doesn't that scenario make the president more susceptible to things like...blackmail - or what if the president's lover is a spy? Are there national security implications to this type of behavior? Pillow talk can be dangerous.

I agree that what goes on behind closed doors is no one's business - however, is there not a different standard for certain roles? If you have an affair, is that going to impact many people if your lover threatens you? Probably not - but it's not the same thing for certain office holders.

Is that fair? Of course not - but then again, one chooses to run for office of their own free will - and should understand the responsibility that comes with that office. And, of course, life is not fair, anyway ;)

Re: The VP Candidates Family
THere seems to be a hidden subtext in all of this, it is as if the ProChoice (the extreme militant section of that faction) crowd is very pissed that both Palin and Bristol did not choose to abort their babies.

Of course the extremely miltant part of the Pro-Choice crowd does not represent the mainstream part of the Pro-Choice crowd.

I think what we are seeing here is a new realization in this country that "life happens" and that we might as well deal with it in the most loving fashion we can muster.

It is high time that the loudest most hypocritical voices of the extreme fundamental "christian" "right" be both reproved and corrected back into the more loving and forgiving stance that their lord must surely expect of them.

The trooper story on the other hand is indeed something that does need and desire a further look into.

But in this country (as in any country) we cannot afford to allow the MSM and even now the Alternative Media (which Daily KOS is a part of) to continue their hew and cry that we all adopt the policy of gulity until proven innocent.

The sensationalism that has been attempted in this thing has for the most put now backfired. Note the Title of this thread for instance. "The VP Candidates Family"... is this about Joe Biden's family? Maybe it is time we all take a much closer look at the hidden inner skeletons of The Other VP Candidate and see what shit surfaces in the blazing spotlights of guilty until proven innocent and rumormongering.

Give me a break! Would you show the same bleeding heart sympathy if the situation was reversed? And Obama had a 17 yr old daughter who got pregnant? No. I'm sure McCain would show no reserve and use it in an attack ad. People would be citing statistics about black unwed teenage moms etc. It would be 24 hour news on Fox, and CNN and the like would follow suit. They would've showed Obama's family no mercy like they did for the Muslim smears and Wrightgate. And I sincerely doubt you would've shown any deference either.

So to the rest of the World, that's why we want her to be next in line to McInsane to press The Red Button that can blow all of you away into Armegeddon. Oh wait, isn't that just what she's itching to do with her Joel's Army?

Good for you LF...but multiply what you did with one child by 5 children and can you see how IMPOSSIBLE something like that could be.
How would you like your child to be set-up to think such a crazy thing is actually possible?

Anyway, Ethics are a big part of the American opionion. Im surprised they allowed her to still be the tenative VP. Shes a ditz.

Its a great pity that ethics is not part of American life, internet chat rooms and the media. In the last few days people have not only invaded the life of American citizens but they have shown themselves to be out of integrity with their conspiracy stories made up as they go along. How anyone can stoop so low is beyond me.

However, America is screaming for change and the Republicans are changing. Sounds like people here don't like the changes and don't like the fact that a mother can work and bring up a family. Just in case you have been asleep the last few decades mothers have been forced to work to be able to afford the essentials in life.

A VP that works and brings up her family with help from the rest of her family is in tune with modern day life in the 21st century, and it is only those that live in the dark ages that do not accept the rights of women to choose for themselves how they wish to run their lives.

It is very clear that the Republicans are changing big time but it seems that you do not wish to see that change happen due to your own agenda of change with a different party.

Well tough, because Sarah Palin being an Aquarian is all about change and those that do not change get stuck and sick if they do not move with the times and the nature of creation.

When asked about the Ninth Circuit Court's ruling concerning the words 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance, stated, "If it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me." (as reported in ADN - Anchorage Daily News) The Governor seemed unaware that the pledge was written in the 1890s, and that the words "under God" were added only in 1954. Ms Palin's ignorance of history was also made clear when she referred to wildlife officers as "brown shirts", inadvertently comparing Alaska State Troopers to Hitler's Brownshirts, the Nazi paramilitary organization.

Worse than these gaffes, however, is the Governor's refusal to support an increase in the maximum family-income limit for children's health-care coverage in the SCHIP program, now set at 175% of the poverty level, one of the stingiest in the nation. This is an embarrassment for a state awash in oil money.
 Quoting: Livin'LaVidaAlaska 485721

These are the sort of things that should be coming out, not this BS about private family matters.

As for the Moral questions. It is commonly assumed by nearly all posters here and elsewhere, alternative media and even MSM that all Amercians are supposed to the The Same Moral Values, which assumption is purely a bull shit assumption. There are just about as many moral standards at play in the USA as there are Americans. That was sort of the point of the creation of the USA in the first place.

Re: The VP Candidates Family
To see the news sources spreading all sorts of info and probably some dis-info on Palin's daughter, pregnancy, unmarried status, etc., is the most vile thing I've ever seen what passes for reporting in this country do!

I was sick when I had to see and then read the 40 million dollar Star Report where in that perverted old reprobate, Ken Star, gave us the gory details of President Clinton's trysts with Monica Lewinski. That was shameful enough. But at least they were both adults!

To attack the VP Candidates' daughter who is apparently seventeen and perhaps pregnant is reprehensible! That girl is not running for office. Her mother is! It sickens me to think that even the press would jump on this bandwagon and so gleefully report it.

The sexual preferences, and activities of the candidates themselves should be off limits unless and until they cross into areas of illegality (ie: Minors, Prostitutes, Non-consensual sex, etc.) and the sexual lives and deeds of their minor children should NEVER be used as fodder for the selling of news papers or commercial time on the broadcast news. The fact that a president has a mistress (or a male lover for that matter) is NONE OF MY BUSINESS! I don't care and don't want to know! His wife and her attorney may be interested in those facts, but as a citizen, I am not!

I do want to know how he or she votes on critical issues, where they stand on the military industrial complex that's ruining this world, and what they intend to do about our dependence on oil, the crashing US economy, the illegal Federal reserve bank and it's actions, and a few million other things that are far far more interesting and important than who they or their children have been sleeping with or what they may have done in those various beds!

Whether Fox, or ABC, or CNN or NBC broke this story - I could care less - other than I'll know which of them to avoid in the future. I would like to get these young journalists and set them down and explain to them that while a public figure may forfeit his/her right to privacy, their minor children do not. Frankly, I would love to see the reporters and papers and media outlets who have deemed this "newsworthy" vs a private and potentially tragic mistake sent back to school and forced to take the ethics class that they so obviously flunked the first time around. Or do they still teach ethics in schools of Journalism today?

This is VILE and it sickens me. I'm a 5th Generation Card Carrying Kennedy-esque DEMOCRAT and Proud of it. But this time, the news media and their band of jackals have attacked a child - a child who's in a very difficult position, and made her a laughing stock and held her up for public humiliation for nothing more than selling their sleazy rags or newscasts. This should not even be visited upon a Republican.

If the media had any decency left, they would en masse start printing full page apologies to the candidate and her family! But I doubt they would even understand the word "decency" as I've used it herein. And they're probably too cheap to print and pay for a full page apology, too!

The once proud Forth Estate has now shat upon the entire nation! They are beneath our collective contempt for this!

Well said Mark and Obama is smart enough that he is TRYING to call of the attack dogs because he knows that your reaction is the norm and this could backfire on him
 Quoting: mathetes

These attack dog's might not even have been Obama's in the first place, this sort of tatic sound much more like disgruntled Hillary supposed supporters.
