Why Bristol Palin's Pregnancy Is Relevant
I feel very sorry for Bristol and the Palin family (except Sarah). Bristol is just a kid, she didn't nothing to desrve the media scrutiny. But Sarah knew, or should have known, what to expect when she accepted the Republican VP candidate spot.

Here's why the story is relevant:

Abstinence-only educators
Both Sarah Palin and John McCain back abstinence-only education. No surprises there.

What's galling is this: When the subject is a pregnancy to an unwed, minority teenage mother growing up in some (presumably Democratic) urban area, that pregnancy becomes fodder for lectures from conservatives about bad parenting, the perils of welfare spending and so on. But when the subject is a pregnancy to an unwed, white teenager from some small town in a Republican state, that pregnancy is...a celebration of the wonders of God's magnificence--and choosing life!

Re: Why Bristol Palin's Pregnancy Is Relevant
Hypocrisy on the part of the left.

The Palins are doing EXACTLY what they hope the rest of the country of the country would do: choose to carry the baby and support the mother with the love of family.

No one is claiming that Bristol made an responsible choice in getting pregnant. But she is making a responsible choice by carrying the baby.

Abortion is the easy way out that liberals like to push as part of their enlightened agenda of "choice without consequences" agenda: as long as you submit to the enlightened wisdom of socialism under the effecient care of the political left and their psuedo-intellectual supporters you can have sex without babies and poverty without discomfort.

Given that propaganda it's no surprise that people choose that life. And since people tend to learn from their environment the liberal agenda of government instead of family has led to generations of people mistaking government support and government freedom from responsibility as preferable to the love of family and the freedom that comes from understanding the consequences of decisions and choosing accordingly.

So for the liberals to turn around and assail the Palins for dealing with the consequences of a poor choice in a responsible manner is not only ignorantly hypocritical, is smacks of desperation.

The Palins should be applauded for doing the right thing, not attacked on political terms. They lived up to their convictions. That's more than I can say for most people, conservative or liberal.

There are lots of decent people who had good parents and a moral upbringing who still made the choice to have premarital sex and got knocked up. ALL people are fallible and Shit Happens.

Short of making girls like Bristol wear a chastity belt and keeping her under constant familial surveillance in an effort to force her to live up to her mother's convictions, what do you expect Sarah Palin was supposed to do? I believe she did live up to her convictions by advocating abstinence until marriage to her children. That doesn't mean Sarah Palin could remove free will from her kids until they marry.

LOL! Apparently, she was supposed to keep her locked in a basement or a high tower until they could find a suitable husband to marry her to.

I remember being 16 to 18 years old. There was VERY little my mother could do to control me. I'd bought a car with my own money it was in my name and had a job to pay for it. Short of kicking me out, what was a parent supposed to do? The tighter the reigns of control a parent tries to place on a child THAT old, the harder that child will rebel or resent.

Teaching "abstinence only" in schools, yet wanting to include "all" theories (intelligent design), is contradictory -- it's pushing an agenda. Teach abstinence as a option, teach intelligent design as an option -- not "the only" way with tax dollars.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 491996

She disobeyed her parents. 17 year olds do that.

It would have been easy and politically expedient to have a hush hush abortion as soon as they found out. But they didn't.

Those are the convictions we're talking about.

It's not about abstinence- although abstinence certainly would have prevented this episode and this validates what they are saying: sex has consequences.

It's about taking responsibility when it isn't an easy thing to do. A person can abstain from sex when they are not ready for the consequences which is making the responsible choice on the front end, or they can be responsible and deal with the consequences on the back end.

What is relevant is that of the 40 million women who have had abortions, the great majority were teens who didnt have parents like the Palins.

They and the millions of mothers who were unwed mothers who got to keep their babies and all the parents and sisters and brothers and friends look at Sarah Palin and say...

HELL YES! THAT IS THE CHANGE I WANT!

Re: Why Bristol Palin's Pregnancy Is Relevant
The only "relevant" point in their family business is that a lot of mothers would rush their kid down to the abortion clinic, do away with the baby, and hope it didn't happen again. Instead of killing their grandchild, the Palins are standing by their daughter, the baby, and the baby's father, supporting their decision to marry and give the little one a family.

I knew two people dating in high school who "got in trouble" as it was called, and got married their junior year. Of course, a lot of people didn't think it was going to last. It is rough and a lot of people starting out that way don't make it, but these two are still together- going on 40 years!

OP-

Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion. Her daughter made the decision to NOT have an abortion. Pro Life is what it is called.

You never know, Chelsea Clinton may have had an abortion at the age of 16 or 17. Michelle Obama may have had an abortion.

17 year olds get pregnant every day. As someone said earlier, it's difficult for parents to control every move their teenagers make when hormones kick in.

Move on guys.
