Hurricane Ike - Galveston - Media Blackout

Summary of below:

- No reports of damage in the west end of galveston.

- Home owners still have no idea of the status of their homes

- Police banned media coverage of the west end of the island [violation of 1st ammendment: freedom of the press]

- Even a member of the coast guard that lives in the local area could not get a straight story.

- FEMA has taken over the cell phone service for the Galveston area

Something interesting that could very well be the cause of all the secrecy.

Why would any sane person put a level 4 biodefense lab in galveston?

Here at the Biodefense Barbeque, we tip our hats to the visionaries in Washington and at the University of Texas System that decided to put a huge lab handling the most dangerous and exotic diseases in the world on a barrier island known for periodically being cataclysmically obliterated by hurricanes. Maybe they were taking George Bush's rhetoric denying global warming a little more seriously than prudent planners would.

I have been following the damage report forums set up by KHOU (Houston News Channel) to try and find out the state of the west end, because I started getting a rather hinky feeling yesterday when NO reports of the west end came out by the major OR local news stations. AND, when a helicopter was finally sent up for aerial footage by one local news source, IT SHOWED NO FOOTAGE OF THE WEST END.

In fact, the Coast Guard has video on their site of post-hurricane fly overs and they do NOT show the west end communities.

There is a KHOU forum dedicated to damage on Galveston Island. Access here...

Even the displaced home owners of the West end are in the dark. Last evening it was posted that Houston ABC affiliate Channel 13 (KTRK I believe) reported that "police had banned media coverage of the west end of the island". That was the first disturbing sign.

Then, a resident who is relocated posted that her husband is in the Coast Guard and even HE couldn't get a straight story on the state of the west end.

It has just been reported on Houston local news stations that "FEMA has taken over the cell phone service for the Galveston area".

I fear that portions of the west end of the island are completely gone. And I fear FEMA and LE (Law Enforcement) are trying to keep this from the public until the waters recede.

Not in Galveston;
Used to live in Baytown TX,
I didn't evacuate when cops and fireman came to my neighborhood ordering us all out
because
1. KATRINA DID NOT FLOOD MY 2ND FLOOR
Worst storm ever didn't flood me out, a lesser storm is not gonna. I spent two days upstairs till floodwaters went down.
My house is not wood mnatchsticks. It is masonery.
2. my guns would have been left for looters to arm themselves. I do not support gang bangers shooting cops.
3. Government did NOT pay expenses for us to evacuate, but they do pay for damages if we stay.
Poor people cannot just pick up and then go rent motels after traveling 500 miles without money.

Everybody is real concerned right now about how the stock market bounced back. Oil price is dropping and happy days are just around the corner.....er for those still alive I mean.

I looked up their website this morning.

I don't live anywhere near there now, but 20 years ago I frequented Gaido's.

Great oysters, great cold beer.

It's a Galveston institution.
