Sky TV: Al Arabiya Television says fire seen at U.S. Embassy in Yemen following gunfire and multiple explosions.

Arab television stations said witnesses had seen fire blazing at the heavily-fortified complex and heard heard sounds of weapons going off nearby.

Reports said a car bomb had been used in the attack.

They gave no more details, but Yemen, the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden, has been hit by a series of al Qaeda attacks this year.

One targeted the embassy, another took place near the Italian mission and others were aimed at Western tourists.

The attack comes a day after senior US intelligence officials said al Qaeda was "imploding" and losing support from Muslims across the world.

The attack is more of a financial one than anything else. Clearly meant to induce panic in the markets tomorrow.

that must mean they're going to try to fire up the Russia/China/USA cold war again.

CNN) -- Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions and the sound of gunfire Wednesday near the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa, Yemen.

Witnesses told CNN that security forces had sealed off the area. They also reported seeing a fire.

Embassy officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Regional TV networks were also reporting a car bomb explosion outside the embassy and an exchange of gunfire between guards and unidentified assailants, the Associated Press reported.

A fire broke out in one of the embassy's buildings, they say. The reports, which could not be independently confirmed, made no mention of casualties

CNN Update:

In April the United States ordered non-essential employees of its Sanaa embassy to leave the country after a rocket attack on a compound housing Western and other international oil workers.

The move followed a March 18 mortar attack on the U.S. Embassy that injured several Yemeni civilians and temporarily closed the mission.

So, They, who ever They are (and suspecting Al Qaeda is a kneejerk reaction as we have been conditioned by now to expect) have apparently been trying to hit this Embassy for a considerable time.

Update - Sky News TV:

Two days ago, the US and British embassies (among others) received a letter from Yemen-based Al-Qaeda. The letter said that if the Yemeni and foreign governments do not release their brothers from capture, they will target all foreign interests - especially those of the US and UK; they have suicide car bombers and the like waiting.

the 1st i heard of "terrorism or terror attacks", or at least the 1st i can remember is over in Israel...

terror attacks or "suicide bombings" was the tool that Arafat and his comrades used against the Israeli's...
