RUSSIA STAKES CLAIM ON OIL-RICH ARCTIC
RUSSIA triggered a fresh scramble for the oil wealth of the Arctic yesterday when President Dmitry Medvedev called on his security chiefs to establish a border in the region.

Mr Medvedev laid claim to a vast tranche of the Arctic, telling the Russian National Security Council the area was of great strategic importance.

The US Geological Survey estimates the region contains 90 billion barrels of oil, as well as gas reserves - all increasingly accessible as global warming shrinks the ice cap, The Australian reports.

"We must wrap up all the formalities for drawing the external border in the continental shelf. This is our direct responsibility to future generations," Mr Medvedev told the meeting in Moscow.

Council director Nikolai Patrushev said Russia would defend its interests in the Arctic against rival claims from the US, Canada, Norway and Denmark.

"We must define the borders in the north of our country, where the Arctic lies. Our estimate is it makes up 18 per cent of our territory. And we are saying 20,000km of the state border runs in this region."

The order to assert Moscow's rights came just over a year after a team of Russian explorers became the first to reach the Arctic seabed. They dived 4261m in two mini-submarines and planted a titanium flag on the ocean floor to stake Russia's claim to an area the size of western Europe. The expedition brought back soil samples as part of Russia's campaign to show that the Lomonosov Ridge, an underwater shelf that runs through the Arctic, is an extension of its territory.

They are certainly going to try but the other nations that have territory there such as Canada and the USA and Greenland and Iceland will all have plenty to say about it.

No one is just giving it all up to them.

Re: RUSSIA STAKES CLAIM ON OIL-RICH ARCTIC
when our oil companies set up in alaska in the 70's they purposely undersized the infrastructure setup... this is why they're talking about drilling now but its gonna take a few years.. the western multinationals had been practiced in oil footdragging with their arabian brothers going back before ww2..this is why saddam hussein was made one of their lessors
