It totally depends on where you are located in relation to the quake, as EQ's can dissipate their energy quickly as the distance from the epicenter increases. I was only 5 miles from the epicenter which was in El Segundo (not far from the LAX airport). It was a strong jolt, but very brief, only 1 second or so, like a strong sonic boom without the sound.

Also, equivalent magnitudes of quakes can create a stronger or weaker effect depending on if it is centered very deep underground vs a shallow quake. It also creates a lot more back and forth motion, and much worse damage, if your home is on sandy soil vs bedrock. Soil can liquify in strong quakes, and homes can sink down into the ground like quicksand. I had guessed that it would be a 4.0 quake if it was close by, but it seemed stronger than a 3.0 due to very sandy soil below where I was located when it struck.
