2400 California Prison Guards made over $100,000 last year!!!
Roughly one out of 10 California prison guards was paid more than $100,000 last year, fueled largely by a jump in overtime.

Some 2,400 rank-and-file correctional officers' pay exceeded $100,000 in 2005, compared with 557 the year before, a San Diego Union-Tribune analysis of payroll figures shows.

Big bucks in the big house
One guard grossed $187,000, making him the highest-paid correctional officer in California, according to data provided by the state controller's office.

At the historic San Quentin State Prison near San Francisco, one out of five guards was paid more than $100,000 last year. Add it up, and the average year-end gross pay for a stateprison guard last year was $72,000.

Last year, San Quentin had the greatest number of correctional officers earning more than $100,000 – 182, or about one out of five rank-and-file guards.

Donovan, with 132 guards earning more than $100,000, had the fourth highest. Centinela State Prison near El Centro had 39 earning more than $100,000.

The highest-paid guard in the state last year was John L. Mattingly at High Desert. He grossed $187,000, including $114,000 in overtime. He could not be reached for comment.

Pay up, suckers.

That kind of wage would allow you to live in a run down trailer park in California.

You would need more than that if you actually wanted electricity too.

In MO they are lucky to start out at 17,000. Considering the risk factors involved ... I would say that bloody sucks.

It's the good ol boys system. I just have to wonder if the guards feel like prisoners themselves. I bet they do.

meanwhile, CA teachers make a fraction of what the guards make , with a lot more of an education (and can work in pretty hostile environments themselves in the inner cities).

Wrong.

S.F. Bay Area teachers can make up to $90K - $100K/year, and that's with only working 8 months a year! Not a bad gig!

True and it's disgusting because they get away with crap on inmates that even police officers can't do.

But I heard that Blackwater guards make around $300,000 a year and that there numbers are close to the enlisted folk making one zero less. That's some serious cash, too.

Well, I don't know about SF, but in Marin County, they have some arrangement that pays part of a mortgage or rent, because most mortgages are close to what a normal teacher makes so you might be right. They wouldn't have any schools because "the commute" from one county to the next can be 1.5 hours.

But when your rent for a house/family, forget mortgage, is $3-4,000, something's got to give.

In Sonoma County, just north, no teacher makes near $90,000, but one can rent a decent house for $2,000.

And correction, teachers work 10 months.

In NY, the prison guard unions have lobbied the formerly-republican led senate to keep three empty prisons open for about five or six years.

Look deeper. There is more to it than the guards.

Hate to correct you again but, teachers get 2.5 months of summer off, and an additional 4.5 weeks of vacation during the school year. That equals 4 MONTHS OFF PER YEAR...They WORK 8 months/year.

I come from a family of teachers...I know plenty about it.

Re: 2400 California Prison Guards made over $100,000 last year!!!
So what?

Look, I'm not a fan of police or guards, but we have a real problem in this country about people in the middle class making decent money. I've lived in California and you need that much money to support a family.

It is very sad when the middle class is tearing each other apart because some of us make more money than others . . . the BS about union autoworkers in Michigan come to mind.

Instead of harping about autoworkers in Michigan or prison guards in California making too much money you should be organizing and doing something so you can make that much money. You know . . . so you can own a home, raise a family, take a vacation.

For god's sake, $187,000 in California is NOT a lot of money. A $23 billion bonus for a VP at Lehman Brothers is obscene.

You are part of the problem.

Have you tried living in San Francisco on 90 to 100K a year? Your rent in SF costs 50.

This has got to stop. We will never get ahead while all of us worker bees are acting like chimps throwing poo at each other for making money.

This is what the wealthy want us to do. They can't race bait us as easily as they used to, so now they're using US to tell each other that we don't deserve to make a living wage.

STOP IT!

I am not a guard, I am an engineer, so I don't make that kind of money.

You can check pretty much any district's website and see exactly how much their teachers are making. I challenge you to show me a teacher pay bracket paying 90-100k a year, that a significant amount of public school teachers fall into. Principals dont count.

I believe the average teacher salary in CA is something like 64k a year.

Go ahead and check out any of the several BAY AREA Districts and look at the top pay....MANY are in the $90+K range.

I'm not going to name any Districts, however I have 2 relatives who both get a $99K base + extra duty which brings them over $100K for 8 months of work.

Both of these teachers are Elementary School teachers as well (1st grade and 3rd grade)....not too bad.

Your wrong. I'm married to a teacher. They don't get paid for the time they are off in the summer. However, most teachers set up deferred payments so they get paid throughout the year. But their salary is contracted and only based on the school year. I don't know where you are posting from, but our kids don't get 4.5 weeks of school vacation here. They get 2 weeks... one at Christmas and one during the Spring.

Of course they get paid for the time off...it's already worked into the salary (common sense here)...and 'most' teachers do NOT get their salaries deferred. Most get their checks for June, July, and Aug. all at once at the end of the school year (they're given 3 checks upon completion of the school year).

So you're saying they don't get 4.5 weeks of school vac. during the year, eh? Let's see...

1 week for Turkey day
2 weeks for Xmas
1 week for Spring Break...that's 4 so far, and the other days such as MLK, Presidents Day, etc., add up to AT LEAST another 1/2 week.

Remember, this thread is about Ca. teachers (I have no idea about other states' teachers' contracts).

You really do not know what you're talking about in regards to CA teachers.

wow, so many comments made with NO REAL knowledge of what you actually are talking about! just because the words can come out of your mouth it doesn't make them true...

someone said that you could only live in a run down trailer park on $100k a year in Cali... WRONG! I make MUCH, MUCH, MUCH less and manage to own my own 3000 sq ft home in a great neighborhood on the central COAST. The COAST line is more expensive than inland for those who may not know.

someone also stated that teacher's get three months off... sweet deal, don't complain... are you kidding me? most teachers have to take a second job during the summer and/or get continuing education... yep, teachers get spring break and winter break and holidays during the year. the pay doesn't make up for it... if you think it's such a sweet deal why don't you get yourself an education and join their ranks... i would know, i used to teach... and worked during the summers...and went to school during the summers... on my own dime.

and don't even get me started on the prison guards... the ones i know and have worked with are the most condescending, rude, hateful people I have ever met... don't like your job? quit.... if a teacher acted the way a prison guard acted they'd be fired... yeah, it can be a dangerous job... you KNOW that going into it....DUH. I don't care that it is dangerous... it doesn't give the guards a right to treat people the way they do... again, don't like the job? Leave.

we need a reform to our legal system, plain and simple... and people need to educate themselves before they speak.

When I worked I couldn't make it in Southern California with a $1100.00 a month mortgage, making over 60k a year. Retired, I'm making it on 30k. This includes helping with my grandson. Before retiring, I payed off bills and credit cards. Very little eating out (home cooking is healthier anyways) no buying stuff I don't need.
As far as prison guard salary I have no opinion about the hourly rate except the overtime (is it 1.5 or 2x houly?) is the killer. Its probably cheaper than hiring more personell. In which case you have to pay more in benefit packages, training etc.
I worked in a county jail as a contractor once and I'm sure a prison is worse and I wouldn't want that job for any money unless there were nothing else available.
.
I think the main problem is the amount of prisoners incarcerated for victimless crimes - mostly drug convictions.
